The standard “FORD WSS-M2P180-E Paint Performance, Rigid Substructures, Exterior” developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) describes the performance requirement for a painted part for all exterior rigid body sheet metal and all exterior rigid body parts where the best appearance and highest durability are required. This system is specified for component suppliers covering all processes including in-department and pre-delivery repairs.

This standard is published to define the paint performance of exterior parts that are visible after assembly and is applicable to all surfaces except the weather strip. This standard is not intended for paint applications over chrome.
For model year 2007 and later, all paint applicators must meet the exterior parts painter approval process unless waived by Ford. For painted body-white surfaces, testing, approval, or production of parts using more than one paint supplier is not permitted. For example, the primer, base coat, and clear coat or tinted clear coat used on certain parts must be produced from a single supplier.
All visible parts of the component, including the final external edges visible after assembly, shall comply with all the requirements of this standard. Any local post-mould treatment (flame treatment, sanding) prior to painting shall require additional testing as specified in this standard.
All areas of the component that are visible after assembly should be evaluated or tested. These areas include flanges, parting lines, post molding areas, forming lines, and grooves.
In-department, pre-delivery and refinishing paint repairs must meet the requirements of this standard. Parts must conform to the color requirements defined by Ford. Body color components must be visually compatible with the adjacent body area for orange peel and waviness.
This standard is performance based and does not have certified sources.
Paint materials must be selected from suppliers on the Ford approved source list unless an exemption is granted by Ford. All parts must also meet the requirements of the appropriate applicable design standard.
This standard applies to decoratively painted rigid substrates such as metal and rigid polymers. Typical metal substrates include zinc-plated or zinc-plated steel and aluminum. Uncoated steel is not permitted due to poor corrosion performance.
The surface to be coated must be cleaned by an automated process to ensure that it is free of oil or alkali residues, fingerprints, corrosion, mold release agents, dirt, moisture and other foreign matter.
Surface energy/resistivity or chemical reaction improvements (flash, corona discharge or plasma) or addition of conductive materials required to meet the requirements of this standard shall be specified on the engineering drawing and control plan.
Paint system requirements are shown in the table in the standard.
The film thicknesses specified in the standard are as follows:
Exceptions to these ranges may be required for some colours. Primer should be applied over the cathodic e-coat to ensure the integrity of the paint system with liquid topcoats. The control plan should indicate whether any pretreatment or primer (including adhesion promoters or anti-chip primers) is required to meet the requirements of this specification.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “FORD WSS-M2P180-E Paint performance, hard infrastructures, exterior” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
