The standard “MAN M 3150-8 Surface quality of plastic blanks - Characteristics of the substrate surface to ensure coatability in accordance with quality requirements” developed by the automotive company MAN describes the requirements for the uniform assessment of the surface quality of blanks, coatings, as well as their structure and color matching on MAN commercial vehicles (cabin, cabin add-on parts and chassis).

This series of standards applies to both in-house parts and purchased parts, regardless of the quality and type of component material (sheet metal, plastic, etc.). This standard also applies to trucks and buses. It may also apply to special regulations for military vehicles. However, features that have a functional impact on components are outside the scope of this standard.
The M 3150 standard series includes:
The M 3150-8 standard defines the requirements for the surface properties of plastic blanks that are supplied to the production sites of the MAN truck and bus production network in an unprimed or only partially primed condition. Priming and recoating of these components is carried out at MAN production sites.
The purpose of the M 3150-8 standard is to establish the basic prerequisites for the compliance of plastic components with a final coating with the required quality level (in particular visual appearance). This standard applies to all plastic components, regardless of the material base.
In this standard, the surface requirements are given in the table titled “Visual inspection characteristics and requirements” under the following headings:
The following also applies to SMC/IMC components: In the case of IMC coatings acting as primer and pore filler, the IMC coating leaves a smooth surface. Minor defects such as porosity in the IMC surface can be repaired with putty or filler. The SMC supplier checks the adhesive bond between SMC and IMC over the overcoated cavities. Applicable requirements are met.
The adhesion between the top coat and the IMC coating is fully guaranteed without grinding before the top coat is applied. The IMC coating must be visually recognizable on the blank. The cut edges of the SMC components are sealed in accordance with the documentation, resulting in a smooth surface free of pores and glass fibers.
The material properties in the component-specific technical documentation apply. The gaps must meet all requirements without restriction after the temperature loads that may occur in the supply and production chain.
Visual product characteristics in their various forms are subject to the viewer's subjective perception and can therefore lead to different assessment results depending on the examiner, color and test condition. In case of doubt, the MAN quality department should be consulted. The acceptability of the detected defects is then decided.
In case of doubt, the supplier shall include in his offer the numerical values obtained from three-dimensional surface measurements and similar for the limit values defined in this standard and shall attach these to a quality assurance contract.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluations carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “MAN M 3150-8 Surface quality of plastic blanks - Properties of the substrate surface to ensure coatability in accordance with quality requirements” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
