VW 60258 Sealing Elements - Sealing Test

VW 60258 Sealing Elements - Sealing Test

The standard "VW 60258 Sealing elements - Tightness test", developed by the Volkswagen automobile company, describes three test methods that can be used to assess the effectiveness of the protection against ingress of liquids (e.g. water) provided by sealing elements (e.g. protective covers, protective rings, seals, cable entries) on devices, components, electrical cables and conductors, plug connections, control cables and other assemblies. These test methods can be combined with each other.

When performing tests, after pretreatment, samples are subjected to leak testing by:

  • Temperature cycling load (thermal shock) test
  • Spray water test conditions test
  • Water bath immersion test

During pre-treatment, unless otherwise agreed in the drawings, performance specifications or technical supply specifications, the samples are kept for 50014 hours in working and de-energized (zero voltage and zero current) conditions and under standard climatic conditions as described in the standard “DIN 48 Climates and technical applications - Standard atmospheres”. Openings in the samples that are not relevant for the leakage test must be securely closed.

After the temperature cycle, when performing the sealing test (thermal shock), the samples are aged in the oven at 90 degrees for 0,5 hours to 1,0 hours. Then, they are immersed in the test medium tank for 10 minutes so that the highest point on the body or seal is at least 5 mm below the liquid level. The test medium is colored with water, for example, sodium fluorescein at a temperature of 15 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees. This sequence represents one cycle. After 5 cycles, the samples are wiped with a towel or carefully dried in a room temperature air flow. Then, they are checked for leakage/liquid penetration with the naked eye.

When performing the leakage test under spray water (spray water) load, the sample should be placed in the normal use position on the rotary table and the height of the rotary table should be adjusted so that the center of the sample is at the center of the semicircle of the rotary tube. During the test, the holes in the rotary tube are opened in both directions at an angle of 90 degrees from the vertical. The sample should be sprayed from both positions by rotating the rotary tube in both directions, i.e. up to the limit of the rotary range. The rotary table should be made of grid material (e.g. large-mesh wire mesh) so that it does not act as a barrier plate. The test conditions are given in the table given in the standard. The sample is then wiped with a towel or carefully dried in a flow of air at room temperature. It is then checked with the naked eye for leakage/liquid penetration.

When performing a leak tightness test by immersion in a water bath, the part-specific characteristics are specified as individual specifications (in the drawings, performance specifications or technical supply specifications). The sample is completely immersed in a water tank at the position specified in the individual specifications. The maximum distance between the highest point of the sample and the water surface is 200 mm. The load time is specified in the individual specifications. The following times are generally preferred: 30 min, 2 h or 24 h.

During the test, the temperature of the sample should not be more than 10 degrees Celsius less than the water temperature. It should never exceed plus 35 degrees Celsius.

Unless otherwise specified in the individual determination, the sample should be non-working and stationary with its moving parts submerged. After testing, no leakage should be noticeable to the naked eye. Unless otherwise specified, samples are wiped or carefully dried in a flow of air at room temperature after testing.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “VW 60258 Sealing elements - Sealing test” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
