SAE USCAR 33 Specifications for Testing Automotive LED Modules

Developed jointly by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the United States Automotive Research Council (USCAR), the SAE USCAR 33 standard defines a general-level subsystem light source that specifies test requirements for light-emitting diode (LED) components and modules for use in automotive lighting systems.

SAE USCAR 33 Specifications for Testing Automotive LED Modules

If there is a design, manufacturing or component change in any part of the approved LED modules, the product must be retested. This standard is applied to systems that meet the design, performance and verification requirements set by national and international standards.

An LED module is defined as any LED device and any electronics that will properly energize the LEDs using the vehicle electrical power system along with the associated electrical wiring, connectors and thermal management system. A single test sample is considered sufficient for the entire system.

Failure of any component in the test sample means failure of the entire sample. If components from other manufacturers are requested to be approved for use in LED modules, these component combinations are considered a new LED module and tested separately.

Additional testing may be required to meet certain electromagnetic compatibility, quality, reliability, and durability objectives.

Automotive LED modules need to be tested if:

  • new sample
  • A design or process change made in an existing module
  • Completion of a calendar year as specified in the annual tests table in the annex to the standard

In all automotive lighting systems today, LEDs are replacing existing technologies due to their inherent power efficiency, increased lifetime (with inherent shock resistance), design flexibility and sustained cost reduction. LEDs play an important role in the exterior design of vehicles, with new styles and lighting patterns adding to the appeal of every new vehicle.

Today's smart lighting systems require advanced LED driver solutions that include advanced diagnostics (LED array disconnect detection, overload etc.) and control features. In addition, more advanced systems implement dynamic lighting and motor drivers for headlamp leveling and beam control.

Our organization also provides test services for automotive LED modules within the scope of SAE USCAR 33 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
