Renault Nissan D49 3253 Test Method - Chemical Resistance for Plastic, Rubber Vulcanized or Thermoplastic Materials and Parts
The purpose of the standard “Renault Nissan D49 3253 Test method - Chemical resistance for plastic, rubber vulcanized or thermoplastic materials and parts”, developed jointly by the French automobile company Renault and the automobile company Nissan, is to describe the test methods required to assess the chemical resistance of plastic, rubber vulcanized or thermoplastic parts and materials.

Test methods are classified depending on the location and type of exposure of the part. Depending on the part location, more than one test method should be applied. When selecting the chemicals to be tested, full consideration should be given to the environments in which each part will be used, but it is not necessary to test all of the chemicals specified in this standard.
- Internal parts
- Method 1: Artificial sweat, detergent, insect repellent sun oil, sunscreen cream, liquid paraffin and others are used for the necessary chemical resistance.
- Exterior parts
- Method 2: Artificial sweat, detergent, liquid paraffin and others are used for the necessary chemical resistance.
- Method 3: For the necessary chemical resistance, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, engine oil, acid, polish, windshield washer fluid, detergent, primer, etc. are used
- Method 4: Detergent is used for necessary chemical resistance.
- Machinery section
- Method 5a: For the necessary chemical resistance, gasoline, diesel fuel, engine oil, kerosene, acid, brake fluid, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, corrosion inhibitor, calcium chloride, etc. are used.
- Method 5b: For the necessary chemical resistance, gasoline, diesel fuel, engine oil, kerosene, acid, brake fluid, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, corrosion inhibitor, calcium chloride, etc. are used.
- Production facilities and dealers
- Method 6: All chemicals used in the parts assembly process, vehicle assembly process or transportation processes at dealerships, such as grease, lubricating oil, metal cutting oil, press machine oil, anticorrosive, silicone oil (including emulsion types), paint protection agent, paint remover, mold release agent, detergent, etc. are used for the necessary chemical resistance. In addition, artificial sweating, plasticizer (vinyl chloride, rubber materials) and approved conditioning and conditioning products for body protection are used.
- stress break
- Method 7: Chemicals that the relevant parts come into contact with or may come into contact with are used to obtain the necessary chemical resistance.
- Method 8: For the necessary chemical resistance, gasoline, diesel fuel, engine oil, kerosene, acid, brake fluid, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, corrosion inhibitor, calcium chloride, etc. are used.
The list and concentrations of the chemicals used for the test should be as specified in the table given in the standard. For example, gasoline, diesel fuel, engine oil, gear oil, automatic transmission fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid and power steering oil should be as specified in the standard “Reference liquid materials for RNES B 00087 Compatibility tests”.
The test methods defined in the Renault Nissan D49 3253 standard are:
- Method 1: Appearance change due to friction for interior parts (manual wiping). The purpose of this method is to determine the appearance of abnormalities caused by the application or wiping of chemical products on all polymer materials and parts inside the passenger compartment.
- Method 2: Change in appearance due to friction (crocmeter) for interior and exterior parts. The purpose of this method is to determine the color fastness caused by friction on all polymer materials and parts inside and outside the passenger compartment.
- Method 3: Change in appearance due to friction for external parts (manual wiping). The purpose of this method is to determine the appearance of abnormalities caused by the application or dripping of chemical products on all polymer materials and parts outside the passenger compartment.
- Method 4: Resistance of exterior styrenic materials to bleaching in warm soapy water. The purpose of this method is to characterize changes in the appearance of plastics used in vehicles.
- Method 5a: Engine compartment parts. The purpose of this method is to determine the appearance of anomalies resulting from the application or dripping of chemical products on all polymer materials and parts within the engine compartment.
- Method 5b: Engine compartment parts (immersion and immersion). The purpose of this test is to evaluate the effect of various automotive fluids that are likely to come into occasional contact with plastic, vulcanized rubber or thermoplastic materials and parts.
- Method 6: Resistance to parts/vehicle assembly and process products. The purpose of this method is to characterize changes in the appearance of parts made of thermoplastic or thermosetting that are mass-coloured or coated with paint and parts/vehicle assembly process products and rubber parts that are likely to come into contact with transport process products (such as grease, lubricating oil, metal cutting oil, press machine oil, anticorrosive, silicone oil, paint protection agent, paint remover, mould release agent, detergent, etc.). Includes maintenance and deconditioning products for body protection.
- Method 7: Stress cracking. This test was created due to a large number of customer feedback regarding cracking or shearing of parts in areas subject to mounting restriction (clip, screw) and exposed to a chemically aggressive environment (external opening controls and vents).
- Method 8: Stress cracking for engine (immersion and immersion). The purpose of this test is to evaluate the effect of various automotive fluids that are likely to come into occasional contact with plastic, vulcanized rubber or thermoplastic material and stressed parts.
