Designed by Volvo, a Swedish multinational luxury car manufacturer headquartered in Gothenburg, the STD 423-0014 standard describes an accelerated corrosion test method applied to assess the corrosion resistance of metals in environments where chloride ions, such as sodium chloride from a marine source or road de-icing salt in winter, have a significant effect. This standard presents a test procedure used in conducting accelerated corrosion testing to simulate atmospheric corrosion conditions in a controlled manner.

This test method is suitable for comparative testing in the optimization of surface treatment systems for test panels, specially designed test objects and components.
The climatic chamber must be designed in such a way that it allows certain test conditions to be achieved during the test, so that it can be controlled and monitored. During a period of stable climatic conditions, plus/minus 3 percent RH accuracy will be applied for the average value in RH. This value corresponds to a minimum temperature accuracy requirement of plus/minus 0,6 degrees. During a test cycle, the humidity and temperature levels of the climate chamber should be continuously monitored. Humidity and temperature sensors should reflect the climatic conditions in the actual test area.
In addition, a spray device must be installed for the application of salt inside the climate chamber. The spray device must be capable of producing a finely dispersed, homogeneous spray of salt solution that falls on the test specimens with a flow corresponding to a fall of 15 mm s. The sprayed salt solution is not reused. After spraying until wet, all test specimens should be air dried from visible wetness to regain climate control. Therefore, the climatic chamber must be equipped with a system for drying with forced air flow.
