Developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the SAE J2412 standard describes operating procedures for a controlled radiation, xenon arc apparatus used for accelerated exposure of various automotive interior trim components.

This standard replaces the previously published standard “Accelerated exposure of automotive interior trim components using SAE J1885 Controlled irradiation water-cooled xenon-arc apparatus”.
All other xenon arc tester models use the SAE J1885 standard to perform the test conditions described in the SAE J2412 standard. The SAE J2412 standard is a performance standard based on the test parameters of the SAE J1885 standard. The use of the xenon arc tester to implement the test method described in the SAE J2412 standard must be agreed upon by the contracting party.
Test time, as well as exceptions to sample preparation and performance evaluation procedures in the SAE J2412 standard, are covered in the material specifications of different automotive manufacturers. Appropriate equipment for this test is determined by material testing comparison between devices aimed at meeting the SAE J1885 and SAE J2412 standards. A specific test protocol is made by the contracting parties by material test comparison to compare new test equipment with previously approved ones.
In short, the SAE J2412 standard is a performance-based standard for accelerated weather conditions that uses a xenon arc as a light source to simulate indoor sunlight exposure at an accelerated rate. This standard adheres to the ASTM G155 standard when specifying specific testing and monitoring conditions (ASTM G155-13 standard practice for operating a xenon arc light device for exposure of non-metallic materials). Testing to this standard using a suitable combination of filters ensures that the wear effects that occur when materials are exposed to sunlight through window glass, heat and humidity are reproduced.
