The standard “Renault 32-05-001 Seat foam pad”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, specifies the requirements for moulded or shaped seat foam pads made of expanded polyurethane. It does not apply to integral seat cover pads that will meet the requirements of product specification 32-05-817. In order to be valid, these product specifications shall be accompanied by product specification “32-00-008 Interior trim parts - General requirements”. The Renault standard 32-05-001 refers to, supplements, replaces or cancels the relevant paragraphs of product specification 32-00-008. The terminology and location of the various elements that make up the pads are included in the standard annex (Annex 1).

The seat foam pads must meet the requirements of this product specification under all normal conditions of use of the vehicle. In addition, as part of a set (full seat trimmed), they must meet the requirements of specifications “32-05-163 Complete front seats trimmed - Functional description” and “32-05-173 Rear bench seat and rear seat complete with 2nd and 3rd rows - Functional description” for the part they concern. These requirements may be safety or regulatory specifications, in which case the supplier must apply the provisions of 00-10-415.
In general, parts must meet the requirements of product specification 32-00-008 regarding:
The delivered products must be developed with consideration for end-of-life recycling in accordance with the requirements of the standard “00-10-060 / RNES-A-00001 Design for recycling”. The recycling approval 2005/64/EC requires a recyclability rate of at least 85 percent of the vehicle by mass. To this end, the seats contribute to achieving this rate, which means identifying the material on the drawing.
The regulation recommends increasing the amount of recycled materials in vehicles and increasing the use of these materials. Alternatives should be proposed in this direction. Their use should be considered in the early stages of design.
The supplier must specify to Renault the composition and nature of the materials, as well as the percentage of recycled materials used to produce the parts. The commercial reference of the recycled material must be stated in the plan and the material data sheet. Priority must be given to recycled materials. Any existing solution made from recycled material must be replaced, unless otherwise recommended by the seat engineering knowledge team.
For parts weighing more than 100 grams, marking and identification of materials is required. For parts weighing less than 100 grams, marking should be done if the shape of the part allows it. In all cases, the standard “00-10-060 / RNES-A-00001 Design for recycling” must be followed. For large parts, multiple marking is required.
Regarding the flammability of materials, specification 32-00-008 should be consulted.
The color of the delivered parts must be the same as the color of the approved sample. In general, the filling color should be neutral (white to pale yellow). In foam pads consisting of materials with different lifting properties, each material should be a different color to visualize the interfaces.
Visible foam padding must match the colors specified in the drawing.
Three areas have been identified for material deficiency in surface defects:
Skin adhesion is determined by manual friction. For a complete filling, the total separation area should be less than 100 cm2. In case of separation lines and surface joints between different materials (such as slit fillings, semi-rigid remoulded inserts, two foam compounds), the tools are equipped to mask the joints, connections and ventilation points.
The following defects are considered to be defects that require termination of the contract:
A material defect of between 0,2 and 1 cm3 in the vertical plane is considered an acceptable defect at a maximum rate of five defects per square decimetre.
If the bonding does not impair the mechanical properties of the foam pad (loss of strength and height) and does not cause hard spots, rework is permitted. The total number of reworked areas must be equal to or less than 3 in the areas in contact with the cover and equal to or less than 5 in other areas. Rework is not permitted in the Z area. The material used for rework must be the same as that used in the manufacture of the part to be reworked. The adhesion between the materials obtained by bonding must be greater than the tear resistance of the materials. All excess material is removed by grinding to obtain a surface that allows perfect refinishing. Filling of holes is considered unsuitable because it involves durability problems.
In general, the materials do not have any inherent noise, but they may make noise when they come into contact with metal or plastic components of frames, seat covers, and adjustment controls (such as paddles, buttons, knurls).
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “Renault 32-05-001 Seat foam pad” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
