MS-JF-1000 Body Cover and Synthetic Suede - Seats, Doors

FCA US, LLC, historically known as Chrysler, is one of the “Big Three” automakers in the United States. The firm’s standard, “MS-JF-1000 Body cover and synthetic suede — Seating, doors,” describes the material performance requirements for fabric and synthetic suede systems offered in plain stock or laminated form. These materials are designed for seating, door trim, and other cut-and-sew or molded interior trim applications, as appropriate.

This standard specifies the physical and chemical material level requirements for fabric and synthetic suede materials used in FCA US LLC products. For system level requirements involving the use of this material, please refer to the appropriate component specification. For example, PF-10254 represents the Seat Complete Assembly Performance Standard and PF.90058 represents the Door Trim Panel Assembly and Components Standard. Requirements specified on the engineering drawings will take precedence when specified for the same specification in this standard. For example, heat aging test conducted at a higher temperature.

Textiles covered herein may be made of polyester, polypropylene or other fibers and may be produced using knitted, woven, nonwoven or non-traditional techniques. This standard also includes requirements for source approval of lamination systems consisting of foam and/or other layers such as textile fabrics or polymer support films. Foam requirements are presented in MS-AY-309.

All materials covered and approved by this standard are specified in the Chrysler textile count index. Initial appearance, including design, color, and hand/tactile characteristics, must be approved by the FCA USA design office and creative implementation team. Materials provided must continue to meet the design, color, and hand/tactile characteristics specified by the FCA USA design office and creative implementation team throughout the entire life of their use.

This standard does not cover the bond properties between a rolled product and a mating surface or part. These bonds must be verified through the relevant system level performance standard.

New fabric structures must be pre-screened when presented to FCA US for advanced design. This testing must be provided to FCA US materials engineering to verify that the material in question has a minimum level of automotive durability/performance. The requirements are included in the standard appendix (Annex A).

Construction approval can be granted when a fabric meets the requirements in the tables provided in the standard and is designed for use in a vehicle program. If the target application requires advanced performance material properties, the applicable table testing must be successfully completed.

Testing must be submitted on material produced in a production-grade process using 6 mm 1,7 lb/ft3 foam unless otherwise specified or agreed upon by FCA US material engineering. If the material is intended for use in a non-laminated vehicle application, a separate build package must be submitted. Approvals from this test provide coverage for flat stock applications only.

Lamination approval is required in the following cases:

  • Initial approval of a lamination source
  • Changes in foam type, chemistry, density, fabrics or films
  • Changes in raw material suppliers
  • Changes in production location

The tests required for lamination approval are presented in the column labeled “Requirements for lamination source approval” in the relevant table.

In cases where the vehicle application requires changes to the foam thickness of a previously approved laminate, the following is required:

  • A copy of the initially approved test suite
  • Test results (flammability, bond strength after exposure to as-received and total cleaning)
  • Completed soft cut description form
  • Completed flammability declaration forms

The composition of the material and processing details are reported in the table titled “Manufacturer’s construction description.” Materials proposed for use in a vehicle program are evaluated by FCA US engineering for trimmability aspects such as cutting, sewing, and lamination. Any restrictions on these attributes, including the use of certain laminations or drapes, must be included when testing a material for construction approval. Materials must be capable of being processed through a normal manufacturing process without marking or staining.

Performance requirements for approval are listed in the relevant tables. Fabric durability, workmanship and process capability testing are required for all seating applications. A cross-functional team evaluates the anticipated level of customer satisfaction and long-term durability. Functional life testing requirements are addressed in the applicable performance standard.

Statistical certification data is required where indicated in the table. Data must be reported as specified and submitted at the time of material approval. Statistical data must be derived from at least 6 batches of material. Data from fewer batches may be submitted but must be updated when at least 6 batches have been produced. The number of batches used must be disclosed with the results.

The materials must also meet the requirements listed in the “MS-JP-1-3 Color fastness of interior materials” standard.

Materials that satisfactorily meet the requirements of this standard and the MS-JP-1-3 standard and provide statistical data receive a Chrysler textile number corresponding to the source approval.

Approval documents are kept by the materials engineer and the approved supplier for at least 5 years.
