Volvo STD 121-0002 Painting Y 650 - Plastic Surfaces
The "Volvo STD 121-0002 Painting Y 650 - Plastic surfaces" standard, developed by the Volvo car company, applies only to plastic components. For painting metal surfaces, the "Volvo STD 121-0001 Y 600 Painting - Metal surfaces" standard applies.

This standard specifies requirements for painted parts for both indoor and outdoor use. It also includes requirements for primed parts.
Y 650 painting refers to a defined coating system/procedure specifically designed for plastic components used in Volvo vehicles or equipment. It outlines quality, methods, materials, environmental, and performance requirements. Volvo STD 121-0002 specifies the criteria that suppliers and internal operations must adhere to when applying paint to plastic parts, ensuring durability, appearance, and compatibility.
This standard is important for the following reasons:
- Ensures consistent coating quality on all plastic components in Volvo production.
- Helps verify plastics specific standards for adhesion, chemical resistance and appearance.
- It provides the basis for supplier contracts and audits, ensuring that paint processes meet Volvo specifications.
Painting classes are determined as follows:
- Y 650-1: This class is specified as a painting class for plastic components primarily for indoor use.
- Y 650-2: Y 650-2 is specified as the paint class for plastic-primed components that will subsequently be overcoated. If this requirement is referenced, it must be possible to comply with the final requirements in accordance with Y 650-5, unless otherwise specified in the technical documentation.
- Y 650-3: This class is specified as a paint class for plastic components used primarily outdoors and with moderate cosmetic requirements.
- Y 650-5: This grade is specified as a paint grade for plastic components used primarily outdoors and with high cosmetic requirements.
Color codes must be specified for all paint grades. Standard STD 121-0007 lists the available color codes, including gloss values, for all Volvo brands, while Standard STD 121-0018 lists the available color codes, including gloss values, for Renault Trucks. For color codes for other brands, please contact the manufacturer.
The general requirements are stated as follows:
- To enable the properties of paint systems to be evaluated, the following test conditions must be met.
- The values specified as requirements are valid for test panels on the relevant base material, pretreated and painted with the relevant surface coating system.
- Unless otherwise agreed between the responsible design engineer and the test facility, the requirement values also apply to components in the relevant base material, pretreated and painted with the relevant surface coating system, as long as their design and dimensions allow them to be tested in accordance with the available test conditions.
- Painted test objects must be conditioned before testing in accordance with the standard “STD 1021,1 Conditioning of painted test panels before testing”.
- Washing operations performed on the parts specified in accordance with Y 650-2 must not adversely affect the final result.
- Extensibility requirements must be agreed upon between the design engineering department and the test facility in each case.
- Painted plastic parts for indoor use must meet the fire resistance requirements of standard STD 104-0001. For certification under the European agreement concerning the international carriage of hazardous goods by road (ADR) in Europe, the material must meet ISO 3795.
All chemical products used or sold by the Volvo Group must also be subject to Volvo's internal health and environmental assessment. This assessment covers all chemical products used at Volvo Group facilities, as well as all products sold as Volvo spare parts. Materials containing substances listed on Volvo's blacklist, STD 100-0002, should not be used. Materials containing substances listed on Volvo's greylist, STD 100-0003, should be avoided. Volvo's redlist, STD 100-0005, lists substances that must be declared and those that must not be declared in products placed on the market by the Volvo Group.
Test material and subsequent batch deliveries must be marked in accordance with all applicable local laws, including additional information regarding substances hazardous to health and the environment.
In addition, the following requirements must be met:
- The coating film on the delivered components must be fully cured and must not emit any contaminants that could be harmful to health or the environment.
- It is possible to re-coat a coated surface without any defects occurring on the surface.
- Unless otherwise specified, any paint repair or process change will result in components meeting the specified requirements.
- In addition to the required specifications specified in this standard, any requirements and regulations that may exist within Volvo Group product companies in the form of local specifications and technical regulations must be complied with. These specifications and regulations must be specified in the design-engineering documentation, together with references to test methods, where relevant.
- Film thickness measurements must be performed for process validation. In case of disagreement, tests in accordance with ISO 1463 are applied.
Delivered components must be pretreated and painted in accordance with the surface treatment procedure approved in the standard testing of the surface treatment system and the initial sample testing of the component. Furthermore, in each case, the components must meet the specified coating requirements, such as uniform film thickness, porosity-free structure, and similar quality parameters.
Our organization, which has been supporting businesses across all sectors for years through a wide range of testing, measurement, analysis, and evaluation activities, has a strong team of employees who closely follow global developments in science and technology and are constantly improving themselves. In this context, we also provide testing services in accordance with the "Volvo STD 121-0002 Painting Y 650 - Plastic Surfaces" standard.
