Jaguar Land Rover STJLR.51.5306 Performance Requirements of Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs)
Developed by Jaguar Land Rover, a British multinational automotive company , the “STJLR.51.5306 Performance requirements for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs)” standard describes the supply and performance requirements for thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) materials used in Jaguar Land Rover components and assemblies across all areas of the vehicle.

Types of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) include, but are not limited to:
- TPA: Polyamide thermoplastic elastomer
- TPS: Styrene compound (SBS, SEBS)
- TPO: Thermoplastic olefin elastomer
- TPV: Thermoplastic vulcanizate
- TPU: Thermoplastic polyurethane
- TPC: Thermoplastic copolymer ester
Properties such as type, class and hardness of thermoplastic elastomer are specified in the engineering drawing, not in this standard.
For components used in powertrain or dynamic chassis applications, additional requirements are determined in consultation with the relevant design departments and materials engineering.
This standard does not cover cured elastomers and rubbers within the scope of STJLR.51.5301 or TPO foil within the scope of STJLR.51.5281.
The purpose of this standard is to define test methods and performance requirements for thermoplastic elastomer components. This standard is used in conjunction with basic thermoplastic elastomer material property specifications.
The requirements in this standard are described as follows:
- Supplier requirements: All suppliers must comply with the following Jaguar Land Rover standards, where relevant: “STJLR.51.5226 Standard requirements for production materials”, “STJLR.51.5227 Material control of black and grey box items” and “STJLR.99.9999 Limited substance management standard”.
- Vehicle interior environmental quality: When the material/component falls into the vehicle interior (passenger compartment and cargo area), it must comply with the requirements of the standard “STJLR.51.5229 Environmental quality requirements for interior materials and components”. The supplier has the responsibility to arrange testing according to the latest version of the STJLR.51.5229 standard and ensure that the material/component is compliant.
- TÜV toxicology requirements: When the material/component falls into or repeatedly touches the interior of the vehicle, such as the passenger compartment and load area, all suppliers must comply with the standard “STJLR.51.5232 TÜV toxicity certification requirements for interior materials”. It is the responsibility of the supplier to determine whether the material/component is subject to the latest version of the STJLR.51.5232 standard. In short, the supplier must ensure that the material/component complies with the requirements of the standard. All materials covered by the STJLR.51.5232 standard must be tested by TÜV Rheinland. Suppliers must send materials directly to TÜV for testing.
The general requirements in this standard are described as follows:
- Production: The production method must be consistent and tightly controlled.
- Component presentation: The component is supplied free from any defects, burrs, die holes, gates, blow holes, oil, dirt, weld lines, mold release agent and foreign matter. The component shall not have a mottled or cloudy appearance and shall not exhibit waxing, efflorescence or other defects. When used in a bonded or over-mold assembly, the composition of the thermoplastic elastomer shall be such that no additives or components of the compound adversely affect the bonding process. The over-mold material shall be tensile tested for adhesion.
- Dimensions and tolerances: The dimensions and tolerances of the component should be as specified in the engineering drawing.
- Component weight: The weight of the component or assembly is specified on the engineering drawing. Unless otherwise specified, the weight tolerance is plus/minus 2 percent.
- Material identification mark: All thermoplastic elastomer parts weighing more than 100 g must carry a material identification mark in accordance with the CADJLR.02.02 standard.
- Appearance: Colour, gloss, grain and finish shall be as agreed between Jaguar Land Rover and the supplier and shall match the approved Jaguar Land Rover master sample when assessed in accordance with TPJLR.52.206. The master sample shall be retained by Jaguar Land Rover for reference purposes, stored in a dark, dry environment and renewed annually.
- Coatings and finishes: All surface finishes, coatings, coating thicknesses, flock lengths shall be recorded on the engineering drawing. All surface finishes shall meet all the requirements of this standard.
- Odor: The component shall be free from any offensive odor, both upon receipt and during normal service. Components intended for vehicle interiors shall meet the requirements of this standard.
- Performance: The component must be capable of performing under all conditions likely to be encountered in service. It must be dimensionally stable, not experience significant color or gloss change, not develop tack, or exhibit any other detrimental effects under service conditions that may include a range of humidity values combined with temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees to a maximum value.
- Storage: The component shall continue to meet the requirements of this standard when stored at 5 degrees to 30 degrees in conditions away from direct sunlight and heat radiation and not under direct pressure due to stacking. Molded gaskets shall not retain permanent wrinkles when transported and stored under the conditions specified above.
- Samples: Samples for initial approval testing should be representative of production-intent components as far as possible. They should represent in all respects components designed for production supply and should be produced by the actual production process wherever possible.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “STJLR.51.5306 Performance requirements of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs)” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
