SAE J30 Fuel and Oil Hoses
The “SAE J30 Fuel and Oil Hoses” standard, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), covers fuel, oil, or emission hoses used in connected and unconnected applications for use with gasoline, oil, diesel fuel, lubricating oil, or vapors in the fuel system or crankcase of internal combustion engines in mobile or stationary applications. This standard covers only the hose portion. If connection or fitting is required, this must be agreed upon between the customer and the installer, along with specific requirements.

The SAE J30 standard covers the following types of hoses:
- Gasoline (including ethanol blends)
- Diesel fuel
- Biodiesel
- Lubricating oil
- Liquids/vapors related to emissions
These hoses can be used in connected (e.g., with pre-installed fittings) or unconnected applications.
The SAE J30 standard defines multiple performance classes/types. Each “R” type has different characteristics in terms of pressure rating, temperature range, fuel permeability (how much fuel vapor escapes from the hose), and chemical compatibility (particularly important for modern fuels containing ethanol or other oxygenated compounds).
Manufacturers label hoses as “SAE J30 R9” or “SAE 30R9” to indicate compliance with a specific performance class.
This standard is widely referenced in automotive regulations (e.g., emissions codes), aftermarket fuelline kits, racing applications, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) vehicle specifications.
The number following the letter "R" indicates exactly which performance level it represents.
- Key specifications of SAE J30R1:
- This standard includes an early universal fuel hose rating developed in response to the transition to unleaded gasoline.
