Quality of KIA MS343-11 Wallpaper (Non-woven Fabric)

The “KIA MS343-11 Wallpaper (non-woven fabric) quality” standard developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation, the oldest motor vehicle manufacturing company in Korea, describes a procedure for the quality of wallpaper (non-woven fabric) for automotive interior applications excluding indoor floors.

Quality of KIA MS343-11 Wallpaper (Non-woven Fabric)

This specification is used for the application described in the table titled “Type and application” given in the standard or as indicated on the engineering drawing. In this table, the classification is made as follows:

  • Type A1: Maximum weight 400 gf/m2. Application RR rack, RR pack, trunk mat, trunk floor. Material polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate.
  • Type A2: Minimum weight 400 gf/m2. Application RR rack, RR pack, trunk mat, trunk floor. Material polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate.
  • Type B: Application trunk mat. Material polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate.

The general requirements in this standard are described as follows:

  • Parts utilizing this material must comply with all requirements of the applicable assembly performance specification.
  • The chemical composition and processing conditions should not be changed inappropriately, which may affect the quality of the parts.
  • Before changing the chemical composition of the material, it is mandatory to consult with the materials and quality control department.
  • Wallpaper (non-woven fabric),
    • The reinforcement should be covered with polyethylene film or binder to prevent wrinkling, exposure of bare skin and shrinkage.
    • It should be free from defects in appearance such as blemishes, bare skin, spikes and pits, stickiness, roughness and staining.
    • It should not have excessive variation from the approved master sample in terms of characteristics such as color pattern, roughness and feel.
    • The backing must be properly attached to the fiber layers. Both the backing and the carpet must be of uniform thickness.
    • It must be manufactured as specified otherwise and must not tear or crack.
    • It should not have any defects such as staining, fading, cracking and corrosion when used in contact with different components and different materials.

This material shall be tested by the methods specified in this standard and shall conform to the specified requirements. Samples shall be manufactured by the same process as the parts.

In general, the standard laboratory condition for the tests is 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity. All tests are performed on samples at least 48 hours after molding and immediately thereafter at least a 24-hour conditioning period under the standard conditions specified herein.

Thickness: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. At least 5 test samples must be used and the average value must be reported.

Weight: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. At least 5 test samples must be used and the average value must be reported.

Tensile strength and elongation: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method – Carpet” standard. For tensile strength and elongation after immersion, samples are immersed in 16 degrees plus/minus 40 degrees of water for 2 hours. After removal, the test must be completed within the next 15 minutes. At least 5 test samples must be used and the average value must be reported.

Tear strength: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. For post-immersion tear strength, samples are immersed in water at 16 hours plus/minus 40 degrees for 2 hours. After removal, the test must be completed within the next 15 minutes. At least 5 test samples must be used and the average value must be reported.

Abrasion resistance: H-300 abrasion wheel conforming to “KIA MS35-18 Standard test method - Carpet” is used. 1 kgf load is applied per arm (both arms should be loaded). 50 cycles should be applied for RR shelf and RR package, 100 cycles should be applied for trunk mat and trunk floor. At least 3 test samples should be used and the worst case should be reported. The abrasion degrees in the table given in the standard are as follows:

  • 5: Completely free from wear
  • 4: Pile thread is cut and wear is slightly noticeable but not obvious
  • 3: Pile thread is cut and wear is noticeable but not obvious
  • 2: The pile thread is cut/removed and the wear is clearly noticeable
  • 1: Pile thread cut and excessive wear, excessive pits on the wear surface

Immersion shrinkage: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. At least 2 test samples must be used and the average value must be reported.

Colour fastness to washing: Must comply with the “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. At least 1 test sample must be used and the worst case must be reported.

Color fastness to rubbing: Must comply with “KIA MS300-35 Standard test method - Carpet” standard. At least 3 test samples must be used and the worst case must be reported.

Fade resistance: Must comply with the “ISO 105 Textiles - Colour sensitivity test” standard. After the specified exposure, the degree of discolouration, fading and colour change is evaluated according to the grey scale specified in the ISO 105-A02 standard. The irradiation intensity is between 300~400 nm. At least 3 people should evaluate and the lowest result should be reported. The irradiation intensity values are given in the table given in the standard.
