Hyundai Kia MS600-66 Corrosion Test

The “Hyundai Kia MS600-66 Corrosion test” standard, developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors Company, the oldest motor vehicle manufacturer in Korea, describes a corrosion test method under controlled climate conditions. This standard uses the salt spray method as a chamber solution. With this method, a reinforcement test is applied to prevent chassis rust by taking into account harsh environmental conditions.

The terms salt spray, salt fog, and salt mist are commonly used within corrosion testing standards. In this context, they are considered equivalent and interchangeable terms.

This method, which is a type of cyclic corrosion test, involves an accelerated corrosion test in a complex environment. The main steps in performing this test are as follows:

  • Step 1: Salt immersion (40 degrees for 4 hours)
  • Step 2: Drying (70 hours at 30 degrees and 2 percent relative humidity)
  • Step 3: Soaking (50 hours at 95 degrees and 2 percent relative humidity)
  • Step 4: Natural drying (25 hours at 60 degrees and 1,5 percent relative humidity)
  • Step 5: Freezing (20 hours at minus 2,5 degrees)

Transition times are determined as follows:

  • 1 minutes from step 2 to step 30
  • 2 minutes from step 3 to step 20
  • 3 minutes from step 4 to step 20
  • Step 4 to step 5 60 minutes
  • 5 minutes from step 1 to step 20

In total, the entire cycle is 12 hours and can be repeated if necessary.

In general, to investigate the corrosion characteristics, immersion, salt spray and cyclic corrosion tests are performed in the automotive industry. Generally, the corrosion conditions simulate the splash zone environment. Immersion tests and salt spray tests are based on international standards. In the case of cyclic corrosion test, the Hyundai/Kia MS 600-66 industry standard is used, which is based on simulated low temperature environment, because there is no other international standard for cyclic corrosion test with controlled climate and freezing condition.

Salt spray and cyclic corrosion test equipment are equipment that has been verified through formal calibration to prevent corrosion deviations due to location on the sample.

Cyclic corrosion test chambers used in advanced laboratories are equipment that performs cyclic corrosion tests. Four environments are available for standard models:

  • Salt spray chamber
  • Drying room
  • Wetting and waiting room
  • More optional environments (e.g. water spray, solution spray, controlled humidity)

Any combination of different media can be programmed to occur in any order to create a corrosion cycle that will be performed automatically or repeated a preset number of times, or each media can also be selected individually.

Accelerated corrosion tests primarily evaluate products such as metals, coated materials, plastics and woods against corrosive conditions. The test methods involve exposing samples to continuous salt spray for a predetermined period of time. These tests subject the sample to longer periods of time and provide an accurate reproduction of the conditions that automotive components are exposed to in the real world. However, accelerated tests simulate continuous wet or dry conditions, whereas in the real world, automotive components may only be exposed to these conditions for a short period of time. These tests also have a higher salt concentration than in real world situations, and automotive components may be exposed to salts other than just sodium chloride in the real world.

Cyclic corrosion testing focuses primarily on accelerating real-world corrosion failures. These tests evaluate products such as metals, coated materials, plastics, and woods in different environments found in nature. In these tests, the correlation coefficient between laboratory test results and real-world conditions results is better than in accelerated corrosion testing.

Cyclic corrosion testing simulates real-world conditions such as continuous cycling of wet, salty and dry phases. The results offer the best correlation with real-world results.
