Determination of GMW 3205 Indoor Materials Resistance to Odor Emission

Determination of GMW 3205 Indoor Materials Resistance to Odor Emission

The GMW 3205 standard, developed by the General Motors company, describes a test method for determining the odor emission of automotive interior materials when exposed to high temperatures and high humidity. This standard covers, for example, fabrics, coated fabrics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane and thermoplastic olefin, carpets, fillers, insulators, felts, plastic parts and interior paints.

Essentially, any statement in the GMW 3205 standard does not replace the applicable legal regulations. With the test method defined in this standard, the odor emitted from the interior coating materials and components inside the vehicle is detected. This test method is designed to determine if parts and materials used in a vehicle have an unsuitable or offensive odor.

While determining the resistance of interior materials to odor spread, the entire interior of the vehicle is evaluated to determine the overall odor character of the vehicle. With this test method, it is possible to find any component that causes unpleasant odours. In advanced laboratories, the most common methods for odor assessment are gas chromatography olfactometry, dynamic or dilution olfactometry, and testing using chemical sensor arrays and a trained sensory panel. In short, interior trim materials are extremely important in vehicle production.

Another standard referenced in this regard is the following standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE): SAE J1351 Hot odor test for materials used in vehicle interiors. This test method is used to evaluate the odor emitting properties of non-metallic materials used in the interior of a vehicle. This standard includes test conditions, odor panel requirements, odor intensity scale and reporting of results. Data from this test are useful when compared to data from samples with known odor characteristics.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for determining the resistance of vehicle interior materials to odor spread, within the scope of the GMW 3205 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
