The “ VW 01088 Workpiece Edges - Definitions, Drawing Specifications” standard, developed by the Volkswagen automotive company , provides definitions for edge conditions and explains language-independent rules for representing edge conditions with ambiguous shapes in technical drawings. It also describes the relationships and dimensions of the graphic symbols used for these features.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:
The definitions explained above are shown in the figures given in the standard.
The edge conditions of a workpiece are specified using the graphic symbol shown in the figure provided in the standard. The length or direction of the reference line may be adapted to the drawing conditions. The rules for drawing the graphic symbol are included in the appendix to the standard (Annex A).
Properties for workpiece edges of geometrically uncertain shape are given on the basis of:
Individual features are assigned directly to a line (for example, visible body edges, areas with specific operations, or dimensional reference lines) or to a point representing a workpiece edge parallel or perpendicular to the projection plane. Group features for all affected edges are entered only once in the workpiece edge drawing area or near the workpiece image.
Allowable edge conditions are entered in the field on the base symbol with the (plus) or (minus) or (plus/minus) symbol element to determine the edge condition according to the table.
The symbol element (plus) allows for excess material removal compared to the ideal shape of the workpiece edge, meaning a burr for the outer edges and a pass for the inner edges. The symbol element (minus) requires material removal compared to the ideal shape of the workpiece edge, meaning abrasion on the outer and inner edges. If only one symbol element is specified, the direction and size of the burr or abrasion are optional.
Deviations from the ideal shape can be made by specifying the direction of burrs or abrasions and specifying the dimensions. If a geometrically defined edge shape (e.g., 1 x 45 degrees) is required, the edge shape should be dimensioned according to the VW 01054 standard.
If it is necessary to specify the permitted burr direction of the outer edge or the wear direction of the inner edge, it must be entered in specific fields of the dimensional description as required. Specifying the wear direction for transitions on outer edges or inner edges is not permitted.
Recommended edge dimensions are included in the appendix to the standard (Appendix B).
If it is necessary to specify an upper and lower limit deviation for the edge size, both values must be specified, that is, the upper limit deviation (plus) and (minus) above the lower limit deviation behind the symbol elements. If a specific burr or wear direction is required, the specification must be entered in the appropriate field. The entered limit deviations are considered maximum values.
In short, the VW 01088 standard is an internal technical specification of the Volkswagen Group that defines how the condition of edges on mechanical parts should be represented and indicated in technical drawings. This standard is particularly important in the design and manufacture of components where edge quality affects functionality, safety, or assembly accuracy.
This standard is often used in conjunction with other Volkswagen standards such as VW 01050 and VW 01054, which cover general drawing practices and dimensioning.
Our organization, which has been supporting businesses across all sectors for years through a wide range of testing, measurement, analysis, and evaluation activities, has a strong team of employees who closely follow global developments in science and technology and are constantly improving themselves. In this context, we also provide testing services in accordance with the "VW 01088 Workpiece Edges - Definitions, Drawing Specifications" standard.
