VW TL 1011 Flammability of Non-Metallic Materials - Flammability, Material Requirements

The standard "VW TL 1011 Flammability of non-metallic materials - Flammability, material requirements" developed by the Volkswagen automobile company describes the requirements for the flammability of non-metallic materials and components made of these materials for the entire vehicle. This standard applies to vehicle parts made of non-metallic materials and having more stringent flammability requirements than those described in the TL 1010 standard.

VW TL 1011 Flammability of Non-Metallic Materials - Flammability, Material Requirements

The applicability of this standard to non-woven fabrics and noise-absorbing coatings in the field of pyrotechnic elements must be discussed and agreed with the relevant Volkswagen company.

This standard applies to the following types:

  • No suffix: Fireproof materials
  • Type A: Foamed and injection-moulded components with low flammability or self-extinguishing material properties (flammability classification according to the table given in the standard)
  • Type B: Sound insulation parts and shock absorption parts with low flammability or self-extinguishing material properties tested according to the PV 3357 test specification

The basic requirements in this standard are determined as follows:

  • Initial supply and approval of changes must comply with the VW 01155 standard.
  • Avoidance of hazardous substances must comply with the VW 91101 standard.

For type without suffix and type A, tests are carried out in accordance with “IEC 60695-11-10 Fire hazard testing - Part 11-10: Test flames - 50 W Horizontal and vertical flame test methods” (only a vertical flame is required). Compliance with this standard meets the requirements of “UL 94 Standard for flammability tests of plastic materials for parts of appliances and instruments” published by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Type B tests and assessments are carried out in accordance with the PV 3357 standard. These tests contribute to a material release decision by the results of combustion tests on the composite material specified in the drawing, i.e. a sample taken from the component. Deviations from the test procedure must be indicated on the drawing.

In the tests of type A without a suffix, 5 rectangular bars are tested. They have a width of 13 plus/minus 0,5 mm, a length of 125 plus/minus 5 mm and a maximum thickness of 13,0 mm. Different sample geometries must be agreed with the relevant Volkswagen department and recorded in the test report. Samples are sampled from the finished part. The sample edges must be smoothed. If it is not possible to take a sample from the finished part, the sample thickness must match the wall thickness of the finished part. If the wall thicknesses of the finished part vary, a complete examination must be carried out using the maximum and minimum wall thicknesses.

Type B samples must comply with the PV 3357 standard.

Tests of type without suffix and type A are performed on unaged samples (as received) and aged samples (heated). The following conditions apply to the aging of samples:

  • Internal components: 70 hours at 2 degrees plus/minus 168 degrees plus/minus 2 hours
  • Exterior components (chassis and drivetrain packages): 100 hours at 2 degrees plus/minus 168 degrees plus/minus 2 hours

Aging of samples before testing at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 10 percent relative humidity:

  • Unaged samples for at least 48 hours
  • Aged samples for at least 4 hours

For type B samples, pretreatment is carried out according to the PV 3357 standard.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “VW TL 1011 Flammability of non-metallic materials - Flammability, material requirements” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
