Developed by General Motors, the GMW 14867 standard replaces all previous regional specifications for interior paint performance for General Motors Corporation and describes internal physical, environmental, and chemical durability requirements for all interior coatings on plastic surfaces. Coatings covered by this standard can be applied to plastic substrates, flexible substrates, rigid substrates or integral leather foam systems.
The extended durability testing described in this standard is required for corporate approval of all new interior paints. The requirements listed in this specification must be met by all paint systems used in General Motors vehicle interiors. This standard is used to generally qualify red and blue colored paints for global paint technology approval. When a new paint system is approved in a specific plastic class, specific color approval and approval paint testing on plastic systems (the reference GMW 14797 standard is for interior trim components) are required to complete the approval for that part. The approved paint system is then entered into the General Motors database or documented with written approval from the responsible materials engineering department. Test requirements for approval paint testing on plastic systems are contained in Table A4 presented in the GMW 14797 standard.
Where parts are produced from pre-painted material, the paint film must withstand all necessary manufacturing processes, including forming stresses and temperatures, in addition to the requirements detailed in this standard.
While applying the tests, a casserole dish is used according to the ISO 20433 standard. Ten drops of each liquid cleaner are dripped onto the painted surface. The liquid should remain on the surface for one minute before the test. With the specified casserole cloth, ten back-and-forth scrubs, approximately 50 mm long, are applied firmly to the painted surface. The color transition to the casserole and any color change on the test plate is evaluated against the gray scale.
