Renault D55 1112 Adhesives or Cellular Materials - Suitability for Waterproofing

The standard “Renault D55 1112 Adhesives or cellular materials - Suitability for waterproofing”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, describes a procedure for determining the ability of adhesives or cellular materials to seal an assembly or a hole. This procedure applies to homogeneous (e.g. sheet-sheet material) or heterogeneous (e.g. sheet-glass, sheet-plastic material) assemblies.

When performing this test, a sealed assembly is subjected to a certain hydrostatic pressure for a certain period of time using mastic adhesive or cellular materials and a possible leak is observed.

Major test equipment used in these tests includes:

• The permeability meter consists of a flat tank connected to a rigid vertical glass tube of 120 cm. The tank must be able to be tilted about a horizontal axis so that it can be placed in all positions between horizontal and vertical. In the vertical position, the upward side of the tank is provided with a drain which allows the tank to be completely filled with water. This tank may be 210 mm × 210 mm in size or circular with a diameter of 210 mm. The upper part of this tank consists of the test plate which must be checked for leaks. It is fixed watertight around its perimeter.
• The spraying device is adapted to the application conditions.
• The extruder is equipped with a gun equipped with a nozzle.
• Printing device
• Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) wedges (various thicknesses)
• Cookie cutter (for shaped items)
• Bakery

When preparing the sample, the nature and preparation of the surfaces are specified in the normative documents. The different assembly cases to be sealed are included in the standard annex (Annex 2). Before the sealing test, the samples are subjected to the polymerization conditions specified in the normative documents.

The test piece usually consists of 0,9 sheets of 2 mm thickness. These sheets can be welded. The sealant in the form of extruded, sprayed, preformed or adhesive tape is applied according to the vehicle configuration or normative documents. The joint thickness specified in the normative documents is achieved by means of washers.

Sealants for various installations:

• Hole condition: Preparation is made according to the product or device to be examined. In plate products, test pieces of products cut using the selected cookie cutter are placed in different holes of the test tube plate. The diameter of the cookie cutter should be 10 mm larger than the diameter of the hole to be closed. In the case of usable devices such as shutters and plugs, these are placed on the test plate in accordance with the vehicle assembly instructions. The possible cooking temperatures and times that the product must undergo before the leak test and the diameter of the holes to be closed depending on the intended application are specified in the normative documents.
• Case of adhesives and cellular materials between planes: The sealant is applied as specified in this standard. The crushing ratio or final thickness and the direction of pressure between the washers are defined in the normative documents. For thick products a press is used.
• Overmolding state: The test tube is made of an overmolded glass plate.

The test piece thus formed is placed at the connection point of the permeability tank, which is fixed by a device. The tank-test tube assembly is tilted to the vertical position to remove the air trapped in the tank by acting on the discharge valve located at the highest point on the edge of the tank. The water column is set at 100 cm or any height specified in the normative documents, taking the lower joint as the base. The test piece remains at a height of 100 cm or any height specified in the normative documents in the horizontal plane serving as the base of the water column. The hydrostatic pressure is allowed to act for one hour or any other time specified in the normative documents. Observe water leaks.
