The standard “FORD WSS-M1P83-E2 Decorative chrome electroplated part performance requirements - ABS or PC/ABS substrates - General outdoor use” developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) describes the performance requirements for copper, nickel and chrome electroplated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene blend (PC/ABS) parts for outdoor applications.

This standard is intended to be used in conjunction with the standard “FORD WSS-M99P1111-A Standard requirements for production materials”.
This specification was originally published where a decorative chrome finish was required for exterior applications including, but not limited to, grilles, door handles, badges, belt moldings and mirror caps.
Per Ford design rule OR-010812-0001, no coating (paint, ink or similar substance) may be applied over chrome plating.
All requirements specified in this specification must be met to achieve acceptable field durability. No requirement to the exclusion of others can guarantee satisfactory performance. Any deviation from the requirements of this specification may be subject to additional performance requirements.
Design verification, material color fastness/compliance certification and process verification tests must be performed according to the table provided in the standard. Parts from design verification or process verification tests may be submitted instead of individual test pieces as long as the part quantity in the table is met for material color fastness/compliance certification approval.
Routine testing for process control should be performed according to the table or as specified in the Special Specifications Communication and Agreement Form. The number and frequency of samples required are subject to change due to part geometry or manufacturing concerns and at the discretion of Ford Motor Company.
Coated parts must be free of surface defects and conform to color requirements defined by Ford.
Material substrates used for exterior cladding applications and tested to this specification must be approved against the approved source list for one of the standards WSS-M4D836-B1 (for ABS) and WSS-M4D813-B1 (for PC/ABS).
The decision to use ABS or PC/ABS is guided by the part-specific global materials strategy and all applicable Ford design rules, including those listed in the standard appendix.
The part geometry must be suitable for coating in accordance with all applicable Ford design rules, including those listed in the standard appendix. The use of regrind or recycled material for substrates in coating applications is prohibited.
Parts must be smooth and free of flow lines, warp lines, visible porosity, cracks, sink marks, or other molding defects that could affect the appearance or performance of the part. Molded substrates must also be free of any residual stress that could affect electroplating adhesion, dimensional stability, or appearance. Mold flow analysis should be performed to minimize residual stress in molded substrates.
Parting lines, burrs, and other features of the molding can affect part durability and should be minimized. Any reworking of parting lines prior to coating must be submitted to Ford prior to use in the manufacturing process.
Design verification testing should be completed on geometrically representative parts covered by the production process. Production verification testing should be performed on actual production parts. Where part dimensions dictate test limits or other exceptions, replacement parts or plates require Ford approval.
All visible surfaces of the component, including the final external edges visible after assembly, shall comply with all the requirements of this standard unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “FORD WSS-M1P83-E2 Decorative chrome electro-plated part performance requirements - ABS or PC/ABS substrates - General outdoor use” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
