GMW 14910 Wheel Lateral Impact Test

GMW 14910 Wheel Lateral Impact Test

The GMW 14910 standard developed by the General Motors company defines a test method to determine the ability of passenger car and light-duty truck wheels to sustain a lateral pavement impact.

GMW 14910 Wheel Lateral Impact Test

This test method is applied to determine the lateral or lateral (e.g. pavement) impact resistance of wheels intended for use in passenger cars and light trucks. These tests also take into account the following standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE): SAE J 175 Lateral impact test of car wheels. Likewise, this standard describes minimum performance requirements and relevant uniform laboratory test procedures for evaluating the lateral (curb) impact collision resistance of all wheels intended for use in passenger cars and light trucks.

Another standard in this regard is the “ISO 7141 Road vehicles - Light alloy wheels - Side impact test” standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard provides a laboratory test method for evaluating the axial (lateral) curb impact collision characteristics of a wheel made entirely or partially from light alloys.

Generally speaking, impact tests are performed to evaluate the reliability of the structure when subjected to a sudden force. An impact is a collision between two objects. During an impact event, there is a force response and a dynamic response of the structure. Impact energy absorption by the vehicle structure must be high to reduce danger and protect vehicle occupants. As the structures collapse, the impact energy is gradually lost, minimizing the energy transmitted to the occupants of the vehicle. Impact energy is a measure of the work done by impact loading for a striker to break a sample.

From the impact test, the material toughness as well as the ductile-brittle transition can be determined depending on the temperature of the sample. Before a vehicle is released, it goes through various tests. The basic test is a frontal crash test, a side crash test, and a crash test like child protection. Over the years, engineers have sought ways to minimize crash injuries and fatalities by dissipating the energy from the crash.

Our organization also provides wheel lateral impact test services within the scope of GMW 14910 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
