Ford WSS-M2P190-A Paint Performance, Interior Parts Metal Substrates

The “Ford WSS-M2P190-A Paint performance, interior parts metal substrates” standard, developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD), describes performance requirements for decorative coatings or finishes, including paint, electroplating, and powder coating, on metal and metal-coated substrates for interior use.

Ford WSS-M2P190-A Paint Performance, Interior Parts Metal Substrates

This specification is designed to define performance requirements for decorative coatings or finishes, including paint, autophoretic, electroplating, and powder coating on metal and metal-coated substrates, for a variety of interior applications such as seat rails, towel bars, speaker grilles, brake pedals, and gear controls.

Material specification requirements are used for initial qualification of materials. All parts must also meet the appropriate part performance specification and subsystem design specification.

Material suppliers and parts manufacturers must comply with the Fort company's standard requirements for production materials (Ford WSS-M99P1111-A).

Testing is performed on actual components that are processed during the manufacturing or production intent process. When this is not possible, panels may be used during the manufacturing or production intent process. Panels should be used when the part geometry does not permit testing. Panels must be approved by Ford materials engineering prior to testing.

The substrate must be cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel, aluminum and magnesium or as specified in the engineering document.

The surface to be coated shall be cleaned by an acceptable process, e.g., line cleaning, to remove stamping oils, dust, dirt or debris.

The film thickness of all applicators must be sufficient to meet the performance and appearance requirements of this specification. The film thickness of all test specimens must be reported in the PSW and laboratory report.

Test panels or test samples prepared for investigations in accordance with this specification shall be aged at 72 plus/minus 23 degrees for at least 2 hours prior to testing.

Repaired parts must also meet the requirements of this specification. All repair materials and processes used must be approved by the affected product engineering office. Maximum film thickness and maximum number of repairs are specified in a mutually agreed control plan.

In this standard, the resistance properties are specified as follows:

  • Internal corrosion resistance: Level 6 (according to Ford FLTM Bl 123-03 and ASTM D610-01 standards).
    • Visible components on the floor near heavy pedestrian traffic (risers, rails, towel bars, etc.): minimum number of cycles 10.
    • High-visibility components (headrest rods, ISOFIX wires, actuator rods, mirror stalks, etc.): minimum number of cycles 5.
    • Low visibility components (components not in the previous two categories) (seats, dumping mechanisms, etc.): minimum number of cycles 2.
    • No bubbling, softening, dulling, loss of adhesion or cracking is allowed.
  • Adhesion: Level 0 (per Ford FLTM Bl 106-01 standard, Method B). No peeling or breaking allowed.
  • Chipping (SAE J400 standard, Method C, chip counting procedure according to Method II standard)
    • Number of chips, level 6
    • Chip size, level B
    • Failure point, level S/T
  • Water resistance, level 4 (Ford FLTM Bl 104-01, 240hrs, ISO 105-A02/AATCC Procedure 1). All paint systems shall not show blistering, softening, dulling or loss of adhesion when tested for adhesion within 30 minutes of removal from water.
  • Abrasion resistance, (SAE J948, CS-10 wheels standard). If it is impossible to test a sample of a component, the abrasion resistance shall be determined on test panels. The control plan shall specify the film thickness. The film shall not show abrasion to the substrate.
  • Resistance to cleaning agents, level 4 discoloration (per Ford FLTM BN 107-01, 10 cycles and AATCC Assessment procedure 2 standards). White cotton cloth is saturated with listed cleaners (ammonia glass cleaner and all-purpose cleaner)
  • Curing test, level 3 (according to Ford FLTM BN107-01 and ISO 105-A02/AATCC Assessment procedure 2 standards). 10 cycles of double scrubbing with toluene under moderate pressure through wet cheesecloth.
  • Prolonged exposure to heat, level 4 (according to ISO 105 A-02/AATCC Assessment procedure 1 standard).
