Renault D47 1035 Rubbers and Plastics - Painting

The standard “Renault D47 1035 Rubbers and plastics - Painting”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, describes a procedure for assessing the staining and other changes in appearance experienced by rubbers and plastics, possibly coated with paint or varnish, in contact with staining products or materials. These products or materials may include:

  • Liquid fluids: fuels, coolants, windshield wiper fluids, etc.
  • Viscous liquids: adhesives, oils etc.
  • Pastes: greases, putties, joint compounds etc.
  • Flexible solids: rubbers, plastics etc.

In principle, the material to be tested (recipient) is brought into contact with a material that is likely to stain under certain conditions (donor). The product is then exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light and visible radiation to assess the deterioration in appearance caused by the combined effect of light and staining.

The equipment or donor material used in the tests includes: pipette, clean brush, template with a thickness of 1 mm to 2 mm and external dimensions of approximately 25 mm × 40 mm, and steel parallelepiped mass (equipped with an overload so that the base is approximately 30 mm × 50 mm and the total mass is 500 g plus/minus 10 g).

The tests also utilize a ventilation oven set to 80 degrees plus/minus 1 degree, a 400-watt medium-pressure mercury vapor lamp, and a grey scale, spectrocolorimeter, and cleaning fluids (water, 95-degree ethanol, or other volatile solvents that do not damage the receiving material) to assess damage and staining as defined according to Renault NF EN 20105-A02 and Renault NF EN ISO 105 AO3 standards.

The sample to be tested consists of a test piece of recipient material coated with a product or a test piece of donor material.

For testing the recipient material, two test pieces of at least 50 mm x 60 mm are taken, with faces flat and as parallel as possible. When the recipient material is flexible (e.g. rubber), these test pieces should be placed on a degreased steel or aluminium sheet.

During the application of the product or donor material, the test pieces described above are placed on a horizontal support so that the surface to be examined is visible. The product or donor material is applied to approximately half of the surface of the test piece, as per the examples given in the standard, and as follows:

  • Flowing liquids: using a pipette
  • Viscous liquids: using a brush,
  • Pasty products: using a template
  • Soft solids: a test piece of donor material measuring 25 mm x 40 mm is placed on each test piece, if the thickness is not regular, each test is covered with the mass, after placing a layer of flexible polyurethane foam a few millimetres thick between the mass and the test piece.

At the beginning of the test, the test pieces are placed horizontally in the oven and left for 70 hours plus/minus 1 hour. The product or residue of the test piece is removed from the test tube and the affected area is cleaned using one of the appropriate liquids. The test pieces are then exposed to the lamp radiation for 22 hours under the conditions described in the annex to the standard. The heat and radiation exposure conditions described may be modified to meet the needs of routine control or to reproduce certain specific service conditions. The accepted conditions should be stated in the test report.

The area of the test piece in contact with the product or the test piece is then examined for staining and the color contrast between the stained area and the control area is evaluated using the gray scale under the conditions of the Renault D15 1343 standard. Then, the colorimetric differences are measured using the Renault D15 5083 and Renault D15 5084 standards test methods and the staining limited to the contact area with the transmitter and the staining with lateral migration around this area, the change in gloss is evaluated according to the Renault D25 1413 standard test method.

After the test, the degree of grayscale of the sample, the differences in the shade and brightness of the material, the colorimetric differences between the initial values and after the test, and the deformations are noted.

In addition to the results obtained, the test report should include:

  • Reference of this method
  • Reference of product or donor material and recipient material
  • Name of supplier
  • Method of application of the product or donor material
  • Operational details not specified in the method and possible events that could affect the results.
