VW 52000 Material Quality Verification - Requirements and Documentation
The “VW 52000 Material quality verification - Requirements and documentation” standard, developed by the Volkswagen automotive company , applies to all material quality verifications during the development phase (especially for structural sample inspection) and to the production process and product approval procedure within the Volkswagen Group. This standard specifies the requirements for material testing and the evaluation and documentation of test results. Additional details regarding the necessary verification are explained in the section entitled “Verification of material requirements compliance”.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:
- Material quality verification refers to sample inspection and covers the entire process from material inspection and documentation to evaluation. This concept applies to processes in both the production process and product approval procedure as well as in the construction sample inspection.
- Material quality verification performance score is a new concept for material sample inspection performance score.
All components are subject to different requirement profiles, which are primarily described in engineering drawings and related performance specifications. Documents containing material requirements or requirements for fuels, coolants, fluids, and lubricants are typically:
- TL (technical supply specificationsi): Material-related and component-related specifications
- VW (Volkswagen standards): Individual material standards and high-level specifications that apply in general
- PV (test specifications): Specifications that can be directly specified in the drawing in individual cases, for example referenced in TLs and VWs
- External standards / guidelines / test sheets / recommendations: E.g. DIN, DIN EN, DIN EN ISO, DIN ISO, VDA, ICP
In addition, applicable laws and directives and all other relevant country-specific regulations must be complied with unless otherwise stated in the performance specification. For legally required tests, the current version of the law must always be applied.
To meet material requirements, verification covers the following:
- For the construction sample inspection and production process and product approval procedure, the supplier shall verify in detail that the material requirements have been met. The supplier shall provide material quality verification documents that are complete in content, do not require revision, and correct in terms of testing procedure.
- The VW 52000 standard for the manufacturing process and product approval procedure refers to all material-related requirements and material properties in the drawing and performance specification. If no material-related requirements or properties are listed here, this means that material testing and documentation are not required. If the drawing contains only material properties without material requirements, only the products used should be documented here. The section titled “Process rules for suppliers for the material manufacturing process and product approval procedure” describes additional process rules.
- Additional documentation may be required for BMG and will be agreed upon in advance between the contractor and the purchaser. Test reports must be provided with the delivery of each sample version.
- Finally, quality validations are evaluated based on whether the requirements are met and are then accepted or rejected.
A supplier’s performance score for material quality verification is decisive both for the supplier, for example, in selecting the testing laboratory to conduct material testing, and for the Volkswagen Group in assessing suppliers’ material quality capabilities. This standard explains in detail how a supplier’s performance score for material quality verification is calculated based on previous projects and what this means for the supplier.
The materials testing procedures described in this standard include:
- Polymer part testing (plastics / elastomers)
- Testing of metal parts
- Testing of fuels, coolants, fluids and lubricants
- Testing of electrical and electronic devices and parts
- Technical cleanliness control
- Special materials and semi-finished products
