PSA B65 4501 Complex Material Properties for Engine Sound Insulation

The standard “PSA B65 4501 Complex material properties for engine sound insulation” developed by the French automobile company Renault describes the technical properties that complex materials for engine sound insulation must comply with. This standard applies to absorbers (absorbers) with acoustic absorption function, such as curtains, Izovac products, located under the bonnet in the engine compartment. They consist of fibrous materials or foam materials with a look or back coating. They can be covered with micro-perforated aluminum sheet to achieve high resistance.

In the case of an absorber containing fiberglass, the fiberglass content in the air of work stations (preparation, assembly) cannot exceed 0,1 fiber/cm3 in accordance with the recommendations of the French National Institute for Research and Safety.

Breathable and non-breathable fibers are defined in accordance with the ND 1804 standard published by the French National Research and Safety Institute:

  • Breathable fibers must have a length greater than 5 µm, a length-to-diameter ratio less than 3 m, and a diameter less than 3 m.
  • Non-breathable fibres must have a length greater than 5 µm, a length-to-diameter ratio less than 3 m and a diameter greater than 3 m.

Materials subject to the material technical data sheet procedure must comply with this standard.

Requirements are transferred from system to subsystem according to the overall performances provided by the material in terms of:

  • Regulation and consumption
  • Appearance when new
  • Appearance after wear and tear
  • Appearance after wear and tear
  • Compliance with the straight edge core competencies standard
  • Technical specifications (mechanical, thermal, etc.)

On the other hand, the main requirements are numbered to ensure traceability to the automotive system engineering system. For example, for resistance to microorganisms (mold): MAT_VEH_TMA_301.

The encoding is in the format MAT_XXX_YYY_ZZZ:

  • MAT stands for material
  • XXX identifies the application:
    • VEH for the entire vehicle system
    • INT for indoor applications
    • EXT for external applications
    • SCM for under-hood applications
  • YYY indicates localization
    • TMA for all applications in the environment
    • VIS for visible applications of the environment
    • NVI for invisible applications of the environment
  • ZZZ indicates serial number

This specification must be completed in accordance with the following standards:

  • According to the A15 0540 standard, no changes can be made to these materials without the agreement of the relevant technical services of the PSA Group. Any development of these materials requires a new approval.
  • The B20 0250 standard contains substances/materials regulated within the group and their usage restrictions.

For traceability purposes, materials must be marked from base material to final product batches. Each material must be identified with a sales reference and batch number.

Materials must comply with the PSA B20 0250 standard, which specifies the following relevant requirements:

  • Prohibited substances and in particular the four heavy metals in directive 2000/53/CE, substances in Annex XIV and XVII of REACH, brominated flame retardants, polybromobiphenyls and polybromodiphenyl ethers, regulation on persistent organic pollutants, biocidal regulation
  • Declaration (certificate of conformity regarding heavy metals, PSA substance list including REACH candidate list)
