ECE R-159 UN Regulation No. 159 Movement Information System (MOIS)

ECE R-159 UN Regulation No. 159 Movement Information System (MOIS)

The standard “ECE R-159 UN Regulation No. 159 Movement Information System (MOIS)” sets out uniform provisions regarding the approval of motor vehicles with respect to movement information systems for the detection of pedestrians and cyclists.

ECE R-159 UN Regulation No. 159 Movement Information System (MOIS)

This standard applies to the approval of vehicles in categories M2, M3, N2 and N3 with regard to an on-board system to detect the presence of pedestrians and cyclists in the vehicle's blind spot at close range, to inform the driver and, if deemed necessary according to the manufacturer's strategy, to warn the driver of a possible collision.

The requirements of this standard are expressed to apply to vehicles designed for right-hand traffic. For vehicles designed for left-hand traffic, these requirements are applied by reversing the criteria where appropriate.

The following categories of vehicles M and N are excluded from the scope of this standard: vehicles in which any movement information system is incompatible with on-road use and vehicles which are partially or totally exempt from this standard, subject to the decision of the Type-Approval Authority.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Movement information system (MOIS) means a system used to detect the presence of pedestrians and cyclists in the vehicle's blind spot in the immediate vicinity and to inform the driver and, if deemed necessary according to the manufacturer's strategy, to warn the driver of a possible collision.
  • Approval of a vehicle type means the complete procedure by which a Contracting Party confirms that a vehicle type meets the technical requirements of this standard.
  • Vehicle type for the movement information system means a vehicle category that does not differ in the following essential respects:
    • Manufacturer's trade name or brand
    • Vehicle features that significantly affect the performance of MOIS
    • Type and design of MOIS
  • Vulnerable road user means an adult or child pedestrian or an adult or child cyclist.
  • Information signal means a signal emitted by the MOIS for the purpose of informing the vehicle driver about a vulnerable road user near the front of the vehicle.
  • Collision warning signal means a signal emitted by the MOIS for the purpose of warning the vehicle driver when it detects a possible frontal collision with a vulnerable road user near the front of the vehicle.
  • Vehicle main control switch refers to the device through which the vehicle's on-board electronic system is switched from shutdown to normal operating mode, such as when a vehicle is parked without a driver present.
  • Initialization refers to the process of adjusting the operation of the MOIS after the vehicle main control switch is activated until it becomes fully functional.
  • Common area means an area in which two or more information functions (e.g. symbols) can be displayed, but not simultaneously.
  • The ocular reference point means the midpoint between two points located on the driver's seat 65 mm from the reference point and 635 mm above the vertical. The straight line connecting the two points extends perpendicularly to the vertical longitudinal median plane of the vehicle. The centre of the segment connecting the two points lies in a vertical longitudinal plane passing through the centre of the driver's designated seating position as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Vehicle front means the plane perpendicular to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle and touching the frontmost point of the vehicle without taking into account the projection of indirect viewing devices and any part of the vehicle higher than 2,0 m above the ground.
  • Near side means the right side of the vehicle for right-hand traffic.
  • Near-side vehicle plane means the plane parallel to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle and touching its outermost point in the near-side direction in front of the driver's eye reference point, without taking into account the projection of indirect vision devices and any part of the vehicle higher than 2,0 m above the ground.
  • Offside means the left side of the vehicle for right-hand traffic.
  • Offside vehicle plane means the plane parallel to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle and touching its outermost point in the offside direction in front of the driver's eye reference point, without taking into account the projection of indirect vision devices and any part of the vehicle higher than 2,0 m from the ground.
  • Vehicle width means the distance between the nearside and offside vehicle planes.
  • Vehicle trajectory means the connection of all positions within the vehicle width where the front of the vehicle is or will be located during test drives.
  • A soft target means a target that will suffer minimal damage in the event of a collision and will cause minimal damage to the vehicle.
  • Pedestrian test target means a pedestrian of adult or child size simulated by the soft target device specified in accordance with ISO 19206-2.
  • Cyclist test target means an adult-sized cyclist and bicycle simulated with a soft target and bicycle apparatus specified in accordance with ISO 19206-4.
  • Blind spot boundary means the line connecting all points located at the boundaries of the visible areas in front of the vehicle and in close proximity to the vehicle in question.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “ECE R-159 UN Regulation No. 159 Motion information system (MOIS)” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
