The FORD WSS-M8P5-C standard, developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD), describes the requirements for spray-flocked interior plastic parts. The flock is held together by means of an adhesive.

The mentioned standard is used together with another FORD standard, “FORD WSS-M99P1111-A Standard requirements for production materials”.
The flock process is quite simple and easy. A suitable adhesive is first applied to the surface to be flocked. It is then flocked by penetrating the surface of the adhesive to create the desired velvet coating.
Electrostatic flock applicators charge flock particles drawn to the grounded surface, which will then be flocked. Unlike puffing or puffing application methods, which sprinkle only a layer of flock on the surface, electrostatic application ensures that all of the fibers lie at right angles to the surface, resulting in a velvety surface.
Electrostatic flock is widely used in the automotive industry for coating window tires, glove boxes, coin boxes, door cards, consoles and dashboards. Flocking is also practiced in a number of artistic ventures, including decorating jewellery, ceramics and pottery. Using suitable adhesives, flock is applied to an endless range of materials including plastic, metal, wood, rubber and fiberglass.
Briefly, the flocking process involves applying short monofilament fibers, usually nylon or rayon, directly onto a substrate that has been previously coated with an adhesive. The individual flock strip is only a few thousandths of a centimeter in diameter and ranges in length from 0,25 to 5 mm. Adhesives that capture the fibers must have the same flexibility and abrasion resistance as the substrate. The process uses special equipment that electrically charges the flock particles to stand up. The fibers are then pushed and fixed to the adhesive at right angles to the substrate. The application is both durable and permanent.
Decorative flocking is accomplished using one of four application methods: electrostatic, whisk/gravity, spray and transfer.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for spray-flocked interior plastic parts under the FORD WSS-M98P8-B1 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
