SAE USCAR 12 Electrical Connector Design Criteria

SAE USCAR 12 Electrical Connector Design Criteria

Developed jointly by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the United States Automotive Research Council (USCAR), the SAE USCAR 12 standard describes specific and measurable design criteria to be applied in the manufacture of an electrical connector in a design review prior to tooling.

SAE USCAR 12 Electrical Connector Design Criteria

This standard contains a checklist to assist in its use. The requirements in this standard do not apply in all cases, so engineering judgment should be used on a case-by-case basis. This standard should still be used in conjunction with the SAE USCAR 2 standard for applicable performance specifications (SAE USCAR 2 performance standard for Automotive electrical interconnect systems).

In this standard, a grouping according to the component is given as follows:

  • A Terminals
  • B Secondary terminal locks
  • C Connectors
  • NS Link locks
  • E Secondary connector locks (connector position assurance)
  • F Connector seals
  • G Serviceability
  • H High voltage (≥60 Volt) application requirements
  • I Drawing and general requirements

Elements that strongly influence an electrical connector design features are: contact resistance, tribological and thermal behavior, contact force, material, and connector size. Therefore, much experience or effort is required to design application-specific solutions before interrelated parameters. However, many state-of-the-art electrical connectors are designed by trial and error processes, especially for high currents.

Appropriate models are needed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. Models at a certain level of abstraction are required to produce new design solutions. In addition, holistic computer-aided models enable the electrical and mechanical performance of the connector to be determined.

Today, the general trend towards modularity and the increasing applications of high currents, especially in the fields of production engineering and automotive design, lead to an increasing need for efficient and reliable electrical connection of individual modules. At the same time, connectors are following the trend of getting smaller and smaller.

Our organization also provides electrical connector design criteria testing services within the scope of SAE USCAR 12 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
