FCA 7.G2090 Vehicle Interior Components - Formaldehyde Release Test - Acetyl Acetone Method
The standard “FCA 7.G2090 Vehicle interior components - Formaldehyde release test - Acetyl acetone method”, developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), an Italian-American automotive company, describes test procedures for determining the formaldehyde content in materials such as:

- Textile fiber-based materials treated with phenolic resin and porous sound deadeners
- Textiles, wood fibre-based materials (e.g. masonite) and leather
The equipment used in these tests includes:
- Only type A materials
- Beaker, capacity 1000 ml
- Filter paper 12,5 cm ashless 41
- Only type B materials
- Extraction vessel (glass bottle) with a capacity of 1000 ml screw cap with connection system for tested samples
- generally
- Acetyl acetone reagent
- Spectrophotometer UV visible
- Reagents for formaldehyde test
- Calibrated bottles
- Graduated pipettes
- Test chamber (oven) capable of reaching and maintaining the temperature corresponding to the specified level of intensity, within the specified tolerance at all points, with a maximum relative humidity of 20 percent (the chamber is constructed in such a way that the parts are not exposed to heating by direct radiation from the heating elements anywhere)
- Thermostatic bath capacity is user-friendly and can maintain 40 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees according to test requirement
- Precision scales, plus/minus 1 mg
- Test tubes
Equivalent test equipment may be substituted but must be equal or superior in performance.
The test sample is taken as follows:
- Type A materials: Porous sound deadeners. A minimum of 5 small test pieces are taken from different points to compensate for the uneven distribution of formaldehyde in certain materials in order to obtain a representative sample (approximately 10 g). For preformed materials, test pieces are taken from different compression ratio areas throughout the thickness of the part and also the coatings are removed.
- Type B materials: Textiles / masonite / leather. At least three test pieces, each 40 mm x 100 mm, are prepared from the tested sample. The sampling should be representative of the material under test.
While testing “Type A materials: Porous sound deadeners”,
- The test sample is weighed accurately and placed in a 1000 ml capacity beaker.
- Add 40 ml of distilled water, previously heated to 2 degrees plus/minus 500 degrees, shake well and pour the contents into the test chamber at 1 degrees plus/minus 40 degrees for 2 hour.
- Shake well six times every 1 minutes for a period of 10 hour, then filter the solution using a filter, then allow to cool to ambient temperature for 1 hour.
- 15 ml of filtered solution is taken, placed in a test tube and 5 ml of acetyl-acetone reagent is added, simultaneously preparing the blank solution with 15 ml of distilled water and 5 ml of the same reagent.
- The test tubes, suitably stoppered, are placed in a thermostatically controlled bath at 40 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees for 15 minutes. They are left to cool to ambient temperature in the dark for 1 hour.
- The absorbance is read from the spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 1 nm with a 415 cm optical path cell and a calibration curve is drawn using daily prepared reference standards.
- The formaldehyde concentration (ppm) of the sample is obtained from the calibration curve.
The standard also defines a test method for “Type B materials: Textiles / masonite / leather”.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “FCA 7.G2090 Vehicle interior components - Formaldehyde release test - Acetyl acetone method” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
