SAE J1756 Determination of Fogging Properties of Interior Automotive Materials

SAE J1756 Determination of Fogging Properties of Interior Automotive Materials

The SAE J1756 standard, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), describes two test methods to determine the following trends of interior materials used in automobiles and other vehicles:

SAE J1756 Determination of Fogging Properties of Interior Automotive Materials

  • Tendency to form a light scattering residue (fog) on a glass surface
  • Tendency to form a measurable residue (mass) on aluminum foil

These test methods are applied to the measurement of fog condensation on glass or aluminum foil surfaces within the limits of test conditions. It is the responsibility of those who practice these testing methods to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Fogging (fogging) is the effect caused by the condensation of different volatile organic compound (VOC) gases that can evaporate from the upholstery materials inside the vehicle. The presence of volatile organic compounds in these environments should be limited. In this respect, it is extremely important to evaluate all vehicle interior and ventilation system materials.

The fogging properties of flooring materials in vehicle interiors are determined using two different methods: method A (photometric method) and method B (gravimetric method).

In the photometric method, fogging is measured by measuring specular gloss to determine the change in reflective index of 60 degrees before and after the test sample is placed in a beaker covered with a piece of chilled glass, and the bottom of the beaker is placed in a controlled temperature oil bath for a specified period of time.

In the gravimetric method, it calculates condensation by using an aluminum foil disc instead of a piece of glass to cover the beaker inside the test sample. The disc is weighed before and after the test to determine the change in weight. The controlled heating unit has different holes to hold test sample beakers.

In addition to the SAE J1756 standard for the determination of fogging properties, the "ISO 6452 Rubber or plastic coated fabrics - Determination of the fogging properties of upholstery materials in the interior of the cars" developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the "DIN 75201" standard published by the German Standardization Institute (DIN). Determination of the fogging properties of the coating materials in the interior" standard is taken into account.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for the determination of fogging properties of interior automotive materials, within the scope of the SAE J1756 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
