ISUZU ISC-F20-031A Aging of Internal Parts for Flammability Test

ISUZU ISC-F20-031A Aging of Internal Parts for Flammability Test

The “ISUZU ISC-F20-031A Aging of internal parts for flammability test” standard, developed by ISUZU, one of the leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles and diesel engines in Japan and the world, describes the aging procedures of internal parts required in preparation for the FMVSS 302 flammability test.

ISUZU ISC-F20-031A Aging of Internal Parts for Flammability Test

In the case of an internal part that is a composite or assembly made of one or more types of materials requiring flammability testing, the test specimens shall meet the following conditions:

  • If the surface material of an insert is not bonded or sewn to its adjacent material or is not mechanically fastened, test specimens should be sampled separately.
  • If the surface material of a composite made of one or more materials is bonded to its adjacent material or is not stitched or mechanically fixed, test specimens shall be sampled from the composite.
  • If the cushion and bolster of a composite or assembly are not bonded to their cover or are not sewn or mechanically secured, test specimens shall be sampled from the cushion and bolster.

The size of a test sample shall not exceed 10,2 cm x 25,6 cm. The thickness of a test sample shall be the same as that used in the vehicle. If the thickness exceeds 1,3 cm, the test samples shall be sampled so that the thickness of the samples including the surface material is 1,3 cm.

In the case of a curved part where flat test specimens cannot be sampled, specimens shall be sampled from at least the curved part, with specimens not less than ½ in thick and not larger than 10,2 cm x 25,6 cm including surface material.

Variation in aging test:

  • Weather resistance test (UV weather meter, 100 hours)
  • Weather resistance test (UV weather meter, 20 hours)
  • Light resistance test (fadometer, 100 hours)
  • Water resistance test
  • Thermal cycling test
  • Heating test

When applying the aging test, the aging tests shown in the right column of the table given in the standard are applied to the parts or components shown in the left column of the same table.

The test methods described in this standard are:

  • Weatherability test: Test samples cut to a specified size are exposed to an ultraviolet ray weathermeter for 100 hours. The outer surface or side where the fabric is used is exposed to UV rays. The UV weathermeter shall be a 0205-carbon arc lamp type UV tester specified in the standard “JIS D 2 Weatherability test method for automotive parts”. The tester shall be operated under the conditions specified in the standard JIS D 0205 except:
    • Black panel temperature: 83 degrees plus/minus 3 degrees
    • Spraying time: 12 minutes/60 minutes
    • Water spray condition: A suitable shield should be provided in front of the samples to prevent water from being sprayed directly onto the samples.
  • Weather resistance test: The procedures are the same as the above test method here except that the duration is 20 hours.
  • Light resistance test: Test samples cut to a specified size are exposed to an ultraviolet ray carbon fadometer for 100 hours. Leather or PVC leather or sheets are exposed to UV rays. The UV carbon fadometer shall comply with the test method described in JIS D 0205. The tester shall be operated under the conditions specified in JIS D 83 except that the black panel temperature is 3 degrees plus/minus 0205 degrees.
  • Water resistance test: This test shall be applied to parts manufactured by a process using steam. The steam aging test specified in the Isuzu ISC-C93-001Y standard for automotive interior fabrics and knits shall be followed. The steam aging conditions are as follows: steam temperature at least 85 degrees, steam pressure 98 plus/minus 20 kPa, nozzle diameter 012 to 16 mm, travel speed 30 to 35 seconds/356 mm, and drying at 80 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees x 24 hours (room temperature x 24 hours).
  • Thermal cycling test: Test specimens cut to the specified size shall be subjected to the following cycle twice:
    • Minus 30 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees x 4 hours
    • 38 degrees plus/minus 1 degree, minimum 90 percent relative humidity x 16 hours
    • Minus 30 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees x 4 hours
    • 38 degrees plus/minus 1 degree, minimum 90 percent relative humidity x 16 hours
    • 95 degrees plus/minus 1 degree x 72 hours
  • Heating test: Test samples cut to the specified size are heated in an oven controlled at 168 degrees plus/minus 80 degree for 1 hours.

This standard is part of Isuzu's comprehensive set of engineering specifications for material testing and quality assurance.
