Accelerated Test Method for Light Resistance with Honda HES D6601 Xenon-Arc Lamp

The HES D6601 standard developed by Honda Motor Company describes an accelerated test method for light resistance with a xenon-arc lamp.

A xenon arc lamp is a special type of gas discharge lamp. Xenon arc lamps produce light by passing electricity through ionized xenon gas at high pressure. Highly preferred in the daylight simulation industries, this method produces a bright white light that closely mimics natural sunlight.

All xenon short-arc lamps produce significant amounts of ultraviolet radiation. Xenon has strong spectral lines in the UV bands, which readily pass through the fused quartz lamp envelope. Unlike borosilicate glass used in standard lamps, fused quartz readily transmits UV radiation unless specially doped. The wavelength of a xenon arc lamp is a constant intensity in the 200 to 800 nm wavelength range.

Xenon arc testing is applied to detect property changes of materials, including the effects of sunlight, humidity, and heat, by simulating ultraviolet and visible solar radiations.

Light resistance refers to a material's ability to resist fading after exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light. The light resistance or fade-resistance properties of a coloring agent or dye describe the persistence of the color over the long term when exposed to light, especially light with a high UV content. Long-term exposure to light can cause various changes in the material, such as yellowing, brittleness, or fading.

The most common method used to determine the light resistance level of a color is the wool scale. This scale ranges from 1 to 8, with 8 being the highest level of light resistance. It is based on the properties of different coloring agents, as wool fades at different rates when exposed to sunlight. The proportions are shown on various colored woolen threads exposed to sunlight.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides accelerated testing services for xenon-arc lamp and light resistance, within the scope of Honda HES D6601 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
