GM9741P Instrumental Color Measurement

GM9741P Instrumental Color Measurement

The GM9741P standard developed by the General Motors company describes a procedure for evaluating the instrumental color measurement of vehicles.

GM9741P Instrumental Color Measurement

The observed color of an object depends on the spectral energy of the illumination, the absorbing properties of the object, and the visual sensitivity of the observer in the visible range. Similarly, it is crucial that any widely applied instrumental method takes these same factors into account. Instrumental methods of color measurement provide more objective data than subjective viewing of colors by a small number of people. With adequate care and calibration, instrumental methods can provide accurate and precise measurements of color and color differences that do not shift over time.

The basis of any instrumental color measurement is the demonstration that the human eye perceives color through three receptors. Therefore, all colors are based on a mixture of three bright stimuli appropriately selected to stimulate all three receptors in the eye. Although no single set of true light sources can be used to match all colors (for any three selected lights, some colors require a negative amount of one or more lights), three arbitrary stimuli have been identified. In this way it is possible to identify all true colors.

Through extensive color matching experiments with human subjects with normal color vision, dispersion coefficients were measured for each visible wavelength (400 nm to 700 nm).

Another standard referenced in this regard is the following standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE): SAE J1545 Instrumental color difference measurement for exterior coatings, textiles and colored upholstery. This standard applies to parts and materials used in vehicle manufacture that are intended to have acceptable color matches to a given color standard. This standard is designed for use with opaque or nearly opaque parts or materials and does not apply to transparent materials. The materials included in this application are topcoats, soft interior trim, interior and exterior hard upholstery and exterior film.

Our company also provides instrumental color measurement services within the scope of GM9741P standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
