The “CNH MAT0103S Process Coating Materials for Metal Parts, Supply Requirements” standard, developed by CNH, an American-Italian multinational company, outlines the supply requirements for coating materials to be applied to metal parts by CNH facilities and suppliers. These requirements aim to verify that approved coating materials meet the performance class requirements for process coatings specified in this standard when applied to metal surfaces. Coating materials include any combination of topcoat, primer, or finishing system components applicable to a metal part.

The term supplier referred to in this specification applies to CNH facilities and external suppliers.
To ensure the quality of a painted metal part, the supplier must verify that the paint materials to be applied to the part meet the performance class requirements specified in the tables provided in the standard. The results of the required tests must be included in the initial part samples provided to the supplying CNH facility. Identification of all subject sample materials, including top coat, primer, pretreatment process and supporting documentation must be provided with the submitted test results.
Test specimens to be evaluated within the scope of this standard must only be primed or top-coated with materials approved by CNH materials engineering and listed in the CNH MAT0103Q standard.
The submission of test samples must include a description of all steps in the process cycle used in applying these paints and technical data sheets for the paint materials.
Testing of paint materials to verify properties should be done by a qualified company, such as a paint supplier or pretreatment company.
To verify the performance specified for metal part production, the paint materials to be tested according to the tables shall be applied to sample panels that have been subjected to all production steps that will be used to produce the applicable metal part. Test panels shall be 1010 x 10 cm, matte finish, stainless, #30 gauge, cold rolled steel sheet according to CNH MAT20 standard Class A. For less common part substrates such as aluminum or casting, CNH materials engineering determines the type of test panels to be used for these tests. Samples shall be prepared in accordance with CNH MTM0102 standard.
Final painted parts, especially aluminum cab steps, metal grill screens, hydraulic valve body castings, and tire rims, should be tested to verify ultimate corrosion resistance. These parts exhibit features or geometry that make it difficult to consistently achieve adequate paint coverage. Features of concern include parts with multiple small holes and sharp edges, lap joints, weld seams, and rough surface finishes. CNH supplier quality engineering at the supply facility identifies such parts and requests corrosion testing of initial samples before the supplier approves part production.
Topcoat materials to be applied to metal parts shall meet the initial supply specification requirements listed in the table provided in the standard for the appropriate topcoat performance class specified. Topcoat requirements are determined as a complete topcoat system with the applicable primer coat, unless approved for direct application to metal.
Primer materials to be applied to parts must meet the initial supply specification requirements specified in the table. Primer performance requirements are the same whether a primed part is subsequently topcoated or not, and must also meet the requirements of a topcoat system performance class.
A copy of the completed CNH MAT0103S test form and supporting data must be retained by the supplier for a period of five years. This information must be available upon request by CNH. A copy of this form and supporting data must be provided to CNH for use in a supplier's review of approval for production of a part.
The quality of part surfaces prior to painting is the third element, along with paint materials and painting processes, that determines the appearance and performance of final painted parts. This standard avoids unnecessarily restricting both CNH facilities and external suppliers with respect to such items as mold and mold surface conditions or the characteristics of unpainted plastic or metal part surfaces. However, since the quality of part surfaces prior to painting strongly influences the appearance of the final painted part, factors such as mold or mold surface finish, part surface roughness and texture must be specified and controlled by the part manufacturer in order for the final painted parts to meet the specified requirements. Substrates must also be free of visible discontinuities throughout the entire production process to ensure that the final painted part complies with all applicable requirements of this specification.
Parts should be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Cleaning should remove rust, scale, drawing compounds, rust inhibitors, welding flux, weld spatter. After cleaning, all surfaces should be free of dirt, dust, fingerprints, oil, rust and other contaminants. The cleaning procedures described provide the surface conditions necessary for painted parts to meet the specified paint performance.
