ISO 10605 Road Vehicles - Test Methods for Electrical Disturbances from Electrostatic Discharge

The ISO 10605 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the electrostatic discharge test methods required to evaluate electronic modules for vehicle use. This standard applies to discharges when:

ISO 10605 Road Vehicles - Test Methods for Electrical Disturbances from Electrostatic Discharge

  • Electrostatic discharge in assembly
  • Electrostatic discharge caused by service personnel
  • Electrostatic discharge caused by passengers

Electrostatic discharge applied to the device under test can directly affect this device. The electrostatic discharge applied to neighboring parts can be connected to the supply and signal lines of the device under test in the vehicle or directly to the device under test.

This standard describes test methods for the evaluation of both on-machine electronic modules and complete vehicles. It also describes a test procedure that classifies the electrostatic discharge sensitivity of modules for packaging and processing. This standard applies to all types of road vehicles, regardless of the propulsion system, eg spark ignition engine, diesel engine or electric motor.

This standard is partly based on the IEC 61000-4-2 standard and describes vehicle-specific requirements. This standard does not apply to pyrotechnic modules.

Electrostatic discharge caused by charge accumulations that occur while moving in or leaving a vehicle has gained greater importance with the increase in vehicle electronic modules. Tests simulating the electrostatic discharge of humans, which are widely used in various industries, have been examined and found that they are not fully applicable to the automotive environment.

Tests that simulate electrostatic discharge into a vehicle electrical system are based on the human electrostatic discharge model. Sensitive electrical equipment can be adversely affected by energy from or emitted from electrostatic discharges. This standard describes electrostatic discharge tests applicable to both automotive electronic modules and vehicles.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The expression electrostatic discharge refers to the transfer of electrostatic charge between objects at different potentials that occurs before contact or is induced by an electrostatic field.
  • The expression direct discharge refers to the discharge directly on the device under test.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for electrical disturbances caused by electrostatic discharge in road vehicles, in accordance with the ISO 10605 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
