Hyundai Kia MS655-12 Test Method - Carpet Cleanability

Hyundai Kia MS655-12 Test Method - Carpet Cleanability

The “Hyundai Kia MS655-12 Test method - Carpet cleanability” standard developed by Hyundai Motor Company describes the requirements for the performance and quality of soft-touch paint used on interior plastic parts.

Hyundai Kia MS655-12 Test Method - Carpet Cleanability

This standard is generally used for the application described in the table given in the standard or as specified in the engineering drawing. If the drawing indicator is not included in the table, the indicator in the other table is used.

The coating product parts must comply with all requirements of the relevant coating performance specification. The paint composition and processing conditions that may affect the quality of the parts should not be changed inappropriately. Before changing the chemical composition of the paint, the materials and quality control departments should be consulted.

In case of additional printing process such as screen printing or pad printing on the surface of painted parts, the printed part shell should be dried for one hour at 80 degrees or under conditions for equivalent printing properties.

The color tone should be within the range of the color combination chart provided by the Styling Department or standard samples under agreement between the parties.

It should be free from cracks, peeling, discoloration or other defects in the vibration test specified in the drawing or material properties of plastic products. Also, the coating thickness should be as shown in the table.

If it is not possible to keep the coating thickness due to the size/shape of the products or the working conditions, it should be discussed with the relevant teams. The measuring point of the coating thickness is basically on the flat surface, but if it is not possible, 5 points of the embossed or irregular area are checked and the arithmetic mean value is reported. If it is not possible to measure the coating thickness around the embossed or irregular area, tin plate can be used for control.

In case of using primer, the primer thickness should be in accordance with the table in the standard. In case of using electro conductive primer, the primer thickness should be discussed with the polymeric materials research team.

The material is tested using the methods specified in the standard and is expected to comply with the conditions specified in the table.

Detailed requirements are included in the standard (Table 4):

  • Appearance: Side A, maximum number of defects 1 (distance between defects must be 50mm or more). Side B, maximum number of defects 2 (distance between defects must be 50mm or more). Side C, no special requirements.
  • Gloss: Compared with the standard sample and its gloss is reported.
  • Scratch: Resistance 3.0 degrees or better.
  • Adhesion: M-1.0 to M-2.5.
  • Impact resistance: No delamination (hairline cracks allowed).
  • Moisture resistance: Coating has no discoloration, fading, bubbles, cracks, or gloss loss. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Color difference maximum 2.0. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Chemical resistance: No discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking of the coating and no exposure of the substrate. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Sunscreen lotion resistance: No discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking, gloss deterioration and substrate exposure. No delamination after coating scratch test. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Fabric printing allowed. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Heat resistance: Coating has no discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking, or gloss loss. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Color difference maximum 2.0. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Thermal cycle resistance: Coating has no discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking, gloss loss. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Color difference maximum 2.0. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Fade resistance: No discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking, gloss loss in coating. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Color difference maximum 2.0. Gray scale minimum 3 degrees.
  • Abrasion resistance: For flat surface, there is no exposure of the substrate under the conditions in the table. For curved surface, there is no exposure of the substrate under the conditions in the other table.
  • Antibacterial performance: Germ reduction of at least 99,9 percent initially and at least 99 percent in the long term. All local biocidal product regulations are met.
  • Printing: Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Acetone resistance, printing area should not fade or rub off.
  • Odor: grade 1 to grade 3.
  • Biobased content: Not less than the bio-content stated in the drawing.
  • Hydrolysis resistance: No discoloration, fading, blistering, cracking, or gloss deterioration of the coating. Adhesion M-1.0 to M-2.5. Color difference maximum 2.0. Gloss difference after scratching maximum 0.7. No peeling.
  • Heavy metals and harmful substances: Must comply with MS201-02 standard.
