GMW 14125 Linear Wear Test

GMW 14125 Linear Wear Test

The GMW 14125 standard, developed by General Motors, defines linear wear testing to determine the wear resistance of materials. For this, the surface of the sample is subjected to a controlled abrasive effect with a defined friction medium. This test method is applicable to all types of materials and parts whose surfaces are exposed to wear. However, this method does not replace existing laws and regulations. During the test, a specific number of cycles with a specific friction medium are applied to the sample at a specific pressure force. The sample is then visually evaluated.

Abrasion-resistant fabric, leather or vinyl materials resist surface wear from friction and extend the product's service life. These materials, which preserve their structure during long wear, are a sought-after feature in the automotive industry. Technical textile suppliers today produce performance fabrics that exhibit exceptional load-bearing properties and toughness (the strength and elongation of the fabric needed to break fibers). Especially in the automotive sector, wear-resistant textiles are produced with various compositions and surfaces that best meet the needs of customers. Here, it is important that the material stretches without breaking the fiber. Such materials are produced with special engineering experiences and are lightweight, resistant to abrasion and tearing, non-conductive, suitable for long-term use and do not show flexible fatigue.

In general, while wear occurs, friction has increasing or decreasing effects, but there is no linear relationship between friction and wear factor.

Briefly, the wear resistance of textile samples is evaluated by using a specific friction medium applied to the sample at a specific pressure force with linear wear test.

Depending on the type of material being evaluated, one of three sample holders is used on the linear wear tester:

  • Wide slot specimen holder includes a 32 mm x 140 mm opening for fixing flat specimens.
  • The sample fixing plate kit has an 11 mm x 140 mm opening.
  • When using slightly flexible specimens, an 8 mm diameter rod is placed under the specimen to elevate the specimen above the holder and assist in adding tension.

Our organization also provides linear wear test services within the scope of GMW 14125 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
