MBN 10494-1 Paint Test Methods - Part 1: General Requirements

The standard “MBN 10494-1 Paint test methods - Part 1: General requirements” developed by the Mercedes-Benz Group describes the test methods used to examine the quality and properties of paints, varnishes and coatings in the following cases:

MBN 10494-1 Paint Test Methods - Part 1: General Requirements

  • At the time of delivery for further processing at Daimler Group facilities
  • Covered in the body and main component area and in plastic and other functional parts

Requirements for test methods are specified in the material-specific specification.

Dye testing methods are used to:

  • Laboratory tests, e.g. basic examinations, initial tests, retests, tests in case of operational complaints
  • Process controls of coating at Daimler Group plants

Existing legal requirements and laws for safety requirements, homologation (especially exhaust emissions) and quality must be complied with. In addition, the relevant requirements of the Daimler Group apply.

All materials, procedures, processes, components and systems must comply with current legal requirements regarding regulated substances and recyclability. For information on prohibited and declarable substances, the standards “DBL 8585 General requirements - Negative substance list for environmental protection, hazardous substances, dangerous goods material selection” and “DBL 6714 Negative list of components of process substances” are used.

With all coating materials, care should be taken to ensure the lowest possible odor and the lowest possible volatile substance content (e.g. solvents, plasticizers, etc.).

Preparations/coating materials must be marked in accordance with legal regulations and the necessary information for transport and use must be provided. In case of use abroad, the regulations and rules applicable to these countries must also be taken into account.

For sampling, pre-sampling inspection and sample preparation for testing and for the production of test panels, the specifications of the standards DIN EN ISO 15528, DIN EN ISO 1513 and DIN EN ISO 1514 apply. Unless otherwise stated or agreed, the following test panels are preferred:

  • H-panel: Steel panel, zinc-coated on both sides (zinc coating thickness 7,5-10 pm), thickness 0,8 mm, dimensions 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm.
  • F-panel: Steel panel, zinc-coated on both sides (zinc coating thickness 7,5-10 pm), thickness 0,75 mm, dimensions 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm.
  • MBZE panel: Sheet steel (MB test panel), zinc-coated on both sides (zinc coating thickness 7,5-10 pm), dimensions 500 x 200 mm, 200 x 100 mm.
  • Aluminum panel: Thickness 1,15 mm, dimensions 300 x 100 mm, 200 x 100 mm.

In addition, in agreement with the responsible department, tests are also performed on the substrates used in the relevant part, e.g. plastics, composites, pre-coated materials.

Test layer thicknesses are the dry film thicknesses specified in the material-specific specification.

Before starting the measurement, the function of the film thickness measuring device must be verified using tested verification shims. Verification of function must be in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. A ferromagnetic standard and a verification shim must be used for this purpose.

For the drying conditions of coating materials, the MBN 10531-1 standard is followed. The specified drying time includes the heating time of the substrate. A heating oven is used for drying, which is regularly monitored by means of thermocouples. Proof of the object temperature is provided by means of suitable auxiliary equipment.

When air drying, the time required to reach the drying stage specified in the material-specific specification in accordance with DIN EN ISO 23270-23 is determined when stored in an atmosphere conforming to DIN EN 2 (50 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees, 9117 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity). Accelerated drying by short-term heat application at temperatures below 70 degrees is specified in the material-specific specification where appropriate.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “MBN 10494-1 Paint test methods - Part 1: General requirements” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
