This specification describes the performance requirements for transparent armor used for windows of armored ground military vehicles and other army structures. The requirements of this specification apply when specified in the parts drawing or procurement activity. Transparent armor is the technical term for protective transparents, commonly known as ballistic resistant windows. In case of inconsistency between this document and the purchasing documents, the purchasing documents take precedence.

Ballistic tests mandated by this standard are defined by statistical requirements for consistency. It does not guarantee that all windows of all configurations will survive ballistic effects not defined by this specification. That is, this definition allows careful definition of the distance to the edges and the window size. Windows that do not meet these definitions must be individually ballistically qualified according to the requirements of the system from which the particular windows were purchased.
This specification has been approved for use by the Army Department of TACOM-LCMC and is used by all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense to purchase transparent armor.
The multi-hit kinetic energy performance specified in this specification determines the transparent armor definition for each performance class.
This specification is not intended to restrict the use of many materials and processes used in the design and manufacture of transparent armor. To meet the performance, reliability and longevity requirements of this standard, the right choices must be made. After the first item approval, no material or process changes are made without purchasing activity approval.
Unless otherwise specified by the parts drawing or the purchasing agency, production parts are subjected to the required testing and inspection. Ballistic testing requirements are geared towards exploiting the penetration resistance of transparent armor.
Therefore, conventional laminate sheer armor testing should be performed at zero degree skew using the specified multi-hit pattern. When other fabrication techniques are submitted for testing, such as mosaic layers or laminate interface surfaces that are not parallel to the impact surface, transparent armor is tested to take advantage of its brittleness.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides automotive tank purchase explanation, transparent armor testing services within the scope of ATPD 2352R standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
