Determination of BMW AA-0061 Formaldehyde Emission

Determination of BMW AA-0061 Formaldehyde Emission

In the BMW AA-0061 standard, developed by BMW, a multinational vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Germany, a test method for determining formaldehyde emission from non-metallic vehicle materials and components is defined. This test method is based on the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique.

Determination of BMW AA-0061 Formaldehyde Emission

This standard focuses on the measurement of formaldehyde emissions from non-metallic materials and components. Unlike the photometric method for determining formaldehyde concentration, the method described in this standard uses high-performance liquid chromatography . In this test method, the test sample is first heated in a sealed polyethylene bottle over distilled water at a constant temperature. Subsequently, the water-soluble formaldehyde is detected by HPLC after derivatization. This method provides the formaldehyde emission of a material as a function of mass (mg/kg). This method is also used for the semi-quantitative detection of acetaldehyde.

The key difference between formaldehyde and acetaldehyde is that formaldehyde contains a hydrogen atom attached to the aldehyde functional group whereas acetaldehyde contains a methyl group attached to the aldehyde functional group. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are organic compounds classified as aldehyde compounds. Both are generally colorless gases at room temperature. However, formaldehyde can be found in liquid form on a commercial scale. Formaldehyde is the simplest aldehyde. In addition, formaldehyde is a pungent gas that not only irritates the eyes and respiratory tract, but is also classified as a possible carcinogen.

The BMW AA-0061 standard is part of the BMW GS 93008-4 standard. This standard describes the requirements for materials and products that are expected to be complied with by contractors throughout their entire life cycle.

Formaldehyde is a substance made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and is found naturally in every living system, from plants to animals and humans. One of the most studied chemicals in use today, formaldehyde is a critical chemical building block in the manufacture of hundreds of products and plays an important role in everyday life.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services to determine formaldehyde emissions from non-metallic vehicle materials and components under the BMW AA-0061 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
