FORD WSS-M11P65-A2 Tape, Performance, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive, Double Sided, Exterior, Flexible Substrate

The standard “FORD WSS-M11P65-A2 Tape, Performance, Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive, Double-Sided, Exterior, Flexible Substrate” developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) specifies the performance requirements for adhesive tapes used for exterior automotive applications. The tapes are coated on both sides with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and protected with a release liner. Adhesion is tested to both the part substrate and the body paint. The tape carrier can be of the foam or non-foam type. These tapes are designed to be bonded directly to the body panel without the use of a primer. A primer may be used between the tape and the substrate.

The WSS-M11P65-A2 standard does not require tear-off adhesion, but has a higher performance requirement for peel adhesion. This is consistent with a failure mode for a longer or more flexible part where the part will begin to peel from one end rather than pull straight out. This mechanism is common in parts such as body side moldings and trim.

The WSS-M11P65-A standard requires a peel adhesion test and has a less stringent peel adhesion requirement than the WSS-M11P65-A2 standard. This is designed to simulate the failure mode of a small or rigid part that will be pulled directly from the substrate without the ability to peel. This failure mode is common on parts such as lettering or emblems.

It is not recommended to install these parts below 16 degrees.

The WSS-M11P65-A2 standard is performance based and does not have certified sources.

According to this standard, the tape used for testing must be operable for production line systems.

The tape itself is a finished part. Unless otherwise decided by materials engineering, paint-side tests should be carried out during design verification and process verification according to the table given in this standard . Design verification should be carried out on panels painted for production purposes whenever possible. Process verification testing should be carried out on actual production painted panels.

Tests on the substrate shall be carried out during design verification and process validation according to other tables given in this standard, unless otherwise decided by the materials engineer. In cases where it will be used in production, the primer shall be used during testing.

In the peel adhesion test (Method A), four specimens are prepared for each test condition. Specimens shall meet the adhesion requirements after exposure to the environmental aging conditions listed in the standard. All temperatures listed are within plus/minus 2 degrees. All relative humidity values listed are within plus/minus 2 percent unless otherwise noted. Specimens shall exceed the minimum force values in N/mm as shown next to the tested conditions.

In the shear adhesion test (Method A), the unassembled materials to be tested are conditioned for at least 24 hours at a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 2 percent, then four overlap shear test specimens are prepared for each of the room temperature aging conditions given in the standard as in the above test, but with a tape overlap area of 25,4 x 25,4 mm on anodized aluminum with production paint on the test panels. Wait for the specified time and then test the assembled specimens.

In the liner lift test (ASTM D3330 with exceptions), unassembled materials are conditioned for at least 24 hours at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 2 percent relative humidity. Specimens are prepared in accordance with the ASTM standard, except that a 12,7-mm tape sample shall be cut to 254 mm. Specimens shall be conditioned as specified in the standard and then tested in accordance with the ASTM procedure.

In the holding force test (Method B), the unassembled materials to be tested are conditioned for at least 24 hours at a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 2 percent. Two paint/anodized aluminum specimens are then prepared, except that the overlap shear test specimens have a tape overlap area of 25,4 x 25,4 mm. One test specimen is hung vertically at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and the other at 70 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees. Weights are gently applied to both specimens as specified. Both adhesive assemblies must support the specified time.

In the heat resistance (1,0 mm maximum) test, the unassembled materials to be tested are conditioned for at least 24 hours at a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 2 percent. Then, 25,4 paint/anodized aluminum with an overlap area of 25,4 x 1 mm is prepared on the shear test specimen. After conditioning for one hour, a 250-g weight is attached to one end of the test specimen and hung vertically in a mechanical convection oven at 120 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees for 30 minutes. The specimen is allowed to cool to 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and measured from the top of the aluminum to the top of the plastic or paint using a micrometer to determine whether there is any displacement from the original bonded position.
