PSA D27 5144 Paint Coatings and Similar Products - Painting
The purpose of the procedure described in the standard “PSA D27 5144 Paint coatings and similar products - Painting” developed by the French automobile company Renault is to determine the resistance of paint films and similar products to staining or attack by different products likely to come into contact with them. The table given in the annex of the standard contains the list of relevant products (Annex 1). Products not specified in this table may also be evaluated in a similar manner.

This procedure is applied to a test sample coated with paint or a similar product, as a principle. In addition, with this method, staining and attack on the paint are examined after an accelerated aging test by exposure to light, if any.
Major test equipment used in these tests includes:
- Equipment for applying the product, e.g.
- Spray gun for airless or airmix spraying
- Pipette or syringe with 2 ml capacity
- Glass stirring stick or paintbrush
- Molds for tomato paste products (dimensions 20 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness)
- Steel parallelepiped (with a base of approximately 30 x 50 mm and equipped with an extra load for rubbers and flexible plastics, with a total weight of 500 g plus/minus 10 g)
- Oven with ventilation adjustment (maximum 200 degrees plus/minus 1 degree)
- HPLR 400 NER 400 reflector sun lamp or another lamp with the same performance
- Conditioned room (at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity)
- Cleaning fluid (65-95 degree petroleum ether or 95 degree alcohol or other volatile solvent that does not stain the paint if necessary)
- Approved paint polish product
- White or cotton cloths
- Mask (cardboard or sheet steel pieces)
Painted steel sheet test samples are produced as test samples, with dimensions of 120 x 200 mm and according to the current production range. These should be of current practice. The time between testing and curing should be a maximum of 48 hours. In case of testing on top coats of paint, the tests are carried out on at least 4 top coats:
- 1 light color (white or beige)
- 1 dark color (blue or black)
- 1 metallic color
- 1 metallic color and top coat varnish (double coat)
Depending on the situation, different paints, plastic film, textiles are used. It is recommended to stay as close as possible to production conditions.
Depending on the situation, one of the following application methods is used to support the product to be tested:
- Liquid products: The test liquid is applied to the test samples in such a way that two drops of approximately 20 mm in diameter are formed as follows:
- Liquid products are administered via pipette or syringe.
- Viscous products can be mixed using a mixing stick, syringe or paintbrush.
- Adhesive products: Two discs with a diameter of 20 mm and a thickness of 2 mm are placed using molds.
- Spray products: The product to be tested is applied to one half of the plate with a spray gun. Two drops are applied to the other half of the plate according to the working method described above.
- Sheets and adhesives: Two rectangular sheets or adhesives of 25 x 40 mm are applied to the test sample.
- Rubbers and flexible plastics: Two strips of approximately 25 x 40 mm sample are placed on the test sample, if necessary ensuring that the surface of the strip in contact with the paint is the same as that on the vehicle. If the thickness of the strip is irregular, a layer of flexible polyurethane foam a few millimetres thick is placed between the strip and the weight, if necessary, and then the strip is covered with a weight. Place the test sample horizontally (with the weight if necessary) in the oven set according to the requirements of the standard documents (80 hours at 70 degrees or 100 hours at 14 degrees).
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “PSA D27 5144 Paint coatings and similar products - Painting” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
