FORD WSS-M8P5-C Performance, Sewing Thread

In the FORD WSS-M8P5-C standard developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD), performance requirements for sewing threads used in the interior of vehicles are explained.

These standards are used together with another FORD standard, “FORD WSS-M99P1111-A Standard requirements for production materials”.

Special finishes are applied to automotive threads used for sewing long, multi-layered upholstery fabrics and leathers. In addition, specially designed yarns are produced that will tear in an accident and allow side airbags to deploy or seat belts to be tightened.

A group of yarns has proven its performance in the production of critical parts such as seat belts and airbags. Also ideal for sewing decorative stitches for gear lever covers and headliners. These threads have been developed to withstand high-speed, versatile sewing across multiple layers of fabric and withstand UV light for the life of any car.

Sewing threads are used in almost all automotive interiors. Using the sewing method to create flexible sheet materials such as leather, synthetic coated fabrics or coverings such as upholstery is a common method for joining textiles. The yarns are also used in a wide variety of other interior applications such as instrument panel console trims, convertible soft headliners, steering wheel trims, seat belts, airbags and gearshift covers.

Automotive yarns need to withstand the demands of the manufacturing process in which they are used, perform well in use and survive the lifetime of the vehicle. Threads need to have sufficient strength and abrasion resistance to survive the rigorous manufacturing process that involves running them through sewing machine guides, needle, and materials being sewn, all at potentially high speeds and temperatures.

The performance of the finished stitch is dependent on a number of factors, such as the choice of thread used, needle, seam allowance, stitch density and stitch type. It is important to choose the correct thread size suitable for the material being sewn.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services under the FORD WSS-M8P5-C standard to determine the performance of sewing threads used in vehicle interior upholstery, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
