PSA D47 5243 Plastics - Colour Fastness in Liquids - Under the Influence of Light
The purpose of the method described in the standard “PSA D47 5243 Plastics - Colour fastness to liquids - Under the influence of light”, developed by the French automobile company Renault, is to characterize the change in the appearance of plastics in contact with a fluid (kerosene, petroleum and the like) under the influence of light.

In this method, a plastic test tube, in principle coated with the liquid in question, is exposed to the effect of a mixture of visible and ultraviolet radiation.
Major test equipment used in these tests includes:
- Average pressure mercury discharge lamp.
- Inner panel and lamp holder.
- The grey scale is used for the assessment of deformities defined by the NF EN 20105-A02 standard.
- The spectrocolorimeter is used according to the Renault D15 5083 standard test method.
- Aluminum sheet metal has a thickness of 5/100 of a millimeter or more.
- Each beaker is one liter.
- Woven textile, Cotton, framed, white felt weave, unsized and unlined, unit area weight 105 G/m2 plus/minus 10 G/m2.
- Stopwatch.
- Test tube holder platform.
- Filter paper.
- Denatured ethyl alcohol.
- Test liquids as defined in normative documents (e.g. kerosene, petrol and similar) or according to the PSA B71 6000 standard.
Test samples should be representative of the scale to be characterized. In order to ensure this representation, the basic characteristics of the studied population must be revealed. Selection criteria for test samples must be stated in the test report in accordance with the A10 0156 standard. In case of doubt about sampling, the PSA Group should be contacted to learn the directives to be followed.
Test tubes of sizes ranging from 40 mm x 80 mm to 80 mm x 160 mm are cut from the material to be tested. If this is not possible, a smaller number of test tubes can be used to allow a good assessment of the appearance. At least two test tubes are prepared per material to be tested. For PSA Peugeot Citroen, trichromatic coordinates are determined using a spectrocolorimeter according to the PSA D15 5083 test method.
This testing method is applied as follows:
- Half of the test tube is immersed in the beaker containing liquid for 5 seconds, withdrawn and allowed to flow for 10 seconds, measuring the time with a stopwatch.
- The uncured plant is covered with aluminum foil.
- The test tubes are placed under the lamp on the platform assembly test piece holder located on the inner panel, with the part protected by the aluminum foil directed towards the environment (to close the inner panel).
- The lamp is lit.
- Every 24 hours,
- The lamp is extinguished before lighting the inner panel.
- Excess liquid is absorbed using filter paper.
- The above steps are repeated.
- For the Renault company, the contrast between the exposed feature and the hidden feature of the test tube at the end of 168 hours and 336 hours is graded with a gray scale.
- At the end of 216 hours for PSA Peugeot Citroen or 500 hours for Renault, unless otherwise stated in the documentation.
- Turn off the lamp before lighting the inner panel.
- The test tubes are removed.
- In case of discharge, the facility is gently cleaned using textiles dipped in alcohol.
- Under the conditions defined in the PSA D15 1343 standard test method, test tubes are graded on a gray scale.
- For PSA Peugeot Citroen, trichromatic coordinates are determined using a spectrocolorimeter according to the PSA D15 5083 standard test method.
- Tone changes are observed after grading on a gray scale and a 2-hour post-operative rest period.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “PSA D47 5243 Plastics - Colour fastness in liquids - Under the influence of light” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
