Hyundai Kia MS906-01 Hydrophilic Antimicrobial Coating

The standard “Hyundai Kia MS906-01 Hydrophilic antimicrobial coating” developed by Hyundai Motor Company defines the performance of hydrophilic antimicrobial coating for evaporator core. This material should be used on the evaporator core for vehicle air conditioning or as specified in the drawings.

In hydrophilic coatings, water spreads over surfaces, thereby transporting dirt and various impurities. However, hydrophilic coatings using suitable metal oxides have the additional feature of chemically breaking down complex dirt and impurities using a sunlight-assisted cleaning mechanism.

The requirements in this standard are specified as follows:

  • Parts utilizing this material must comply with all requirements of the applicable assembly performance specification.
  • The chemical composition and processing conditions should not be changed inappropriately, which may affect the quality of the parts.
  • Before changing the chemical composition of the material, the part performance, durability testing and similar properties should be tested and discussed with the materials and quality control departments.
  • This material must be tested by the methods specified in this standard and must comply with the requirements in the table given in the standard.
  • Samples should be subjected to the same treatment as parts.

The detailed requirements are described as follows:

  • Antifungal: No growth visible (to the naked eye)
  • Antibacterial: Reduction rate more than 99 percent
  • Gas adsorption - Acetic acid: less than 20 µg/m2
  • Gas adsorption - Tobacco: Class 1 to Class 3

The standard atmosphere of the laboratory should be 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees temperature and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity.

After preparation, test samples should be kept for at least 48 hours and kept in standard condition for at least 24 hours. The size of the sample should be 50 mm X 50 mm.

The antifungal performance test shall be in accordance with Method A described in the standard “ISO 846 Plastics - Evaluation of the effect of microorganisms”. The test microbial species shall use fungi specified in the standard. It is possible to skip the first performance test if there is a separate agreement between the relevant departments.

Water resistance shall comply with ISO 97601 Method A after testing and drying for 00 hours in accordance with standard ES 72-846. Thermal cycling resistance shall comply with ISO 3 Method A after 846 cycles.

The requirements are as follows: Heat resistance 50 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees, cold resistance minus 40 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees, humidity resistance 50 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees with a minimum relative humidity of 90 percent.

The antibacterial performance test shall be in accordance with the standard “ISO 22196 Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces”. The test microbial species shall be replaced with the bacteria specified in the table. If there is a separate agreement between the relevant departments, it is possible to skip the first performance test.

Water resistance shall comply with ISO 97601 after testing and drying for 00 hours in accordance with ES 72-22196. Thermal cycle resistance shall comply with ISO 3 after 22196 cycles.

The requirements are as follows: Heat resistance 50 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees, cold resistance minus 40 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees, humidity resistance 50 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees with a minimum relative humidity of 90 percent.

The gas adsorption acetic acid test shall be in accordance with the method described below. The cut evaporator coated with hydrophilic antimicrobial coating was used as the sample (sample size 20 mm x 10 mm x 20 mm). The sample size may have some deviations depending on the type of carrier.

  • The evaporator is divided into parts (surface area is about 0,01 m2).
  • The cut vaporizer is placed in a flask (50 ml).
  • Acetic acid (5 µl) is added to the flask.
  • The bottle is kept in the chamber at 4 degrees for 40 hours.
  • The bottle is cooled to room temperature and 1 ml of internal gas is removed.
  • After repeating the above procedure without sample, the internal gas is sampled.
  • The amount of acetic acid is analyzed by gas chromatography.

Gas adsorption tobacco (complex gas mixtures) testing shall be in accordance with the defined method. Tobacco is used for odor rating. Hydrophilic antimicrobial charcoal vaporizer shall be used.

  • The evaporator is kept in the chamber for 20 hours at minus 2 degrees.
  • A closed chamber is prepared (dimensions 1m x 1m x 1m) and 10 pieces of tobacco are burned (1 vaporizer per unit)
  • The air is recirculated for 3 minutes to bind the tobacco odor gas.
  • The vaporizer is attached to the scent tester.
  • The appliance is operated according to the conditions in the table and the odor degree is rated in two modes: A/C on (immediately after 1 minute) and A/C off (sometime after 1 minute).
