GMW 14127 Cold Crack Impact Test

GMW 14127 Cold Crack Impact Test

The GMW 14127 standard, developed by the General Motors company, describes a test method for determining the topcoat cracking resistance in leather materials and the topcoat/topskin cracking resistance in plastic roll materials due to impact at 30 degrees. However, the test methods described in this standard do not replace applicable laws and regulations. In addition, these test methods cover passenger car interior components.

Simply put, cold crack is when any type of vinyl material cracks due to low temperatures. Cold crack expression is involved in a number of different processes, such as steel welding or vinyl production. Unlike weld steel, cold cracking occurs when vinyl is exposed to extreme cold levels. When vinyl freezes, the material cracks, exposing the bonds inside. Depending on how cold the weather is, vinyl material is highly susceptible to cracking. Certain types of vinyl are manufactured to withstand certain temperatures.

The method applied to determine the cold crack resistance of leather materials is to determine the cold crack temperature of a leather, the temperature at which the leather will crack once it is folded outward rapidly. This method is used with all types of fine leather with surface finish. During the tests, the leather material is usually held between two pieces of wood. The skin is cooled and then the apparatus is closed and it is broken outwards without touching it directly by hand. This method is repeated at successively lower temperatures until cracking occurs.

Leather covers used in automobiles can dry out in the heat and crack in the cold. This material needs to be kept in suitable conditions to prevent heat, cold and moisture damage. The problem with some leather materials is that they can become hard and brittle when exposed to cold. Vinyl materials can actually freeze and then crack if impacted. Such cold cracking is a concern for vinyl binders in environments subject to extreme climate change.

Our organization also provides cold crack impact test services within the scope of GMW 14127 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
