Renault 47-01-000 Protection of Metallic Parts and Assemblies on Vehicles Against Environmental Corrosive Damage

Renault 47-01-000 Protection of Metallic Parts and Assemblies on Vehicles Against Environmental Corrosive Damage

In the standard “Renault 47-01-000 Protection of metallic parts and assemblies on vehicles against environmental corrosive damage” developed by the French automobile company Renault, the expected corrosion prevention requirements are described to protect metallic parts and assemblies from environmental damage, according to the defined corrosion prevention coding. This coding must be provided by a corrosion prevention production planning and control.

The tests required in the specifications are preferably performed on entire parts or assemblies. During static corrosion testing, the positioning of the part or assembly is important. The position should allow corrosion testing to be performed in the worst-case scenario of the application. It may be necessary to test multiple parts to verify various areas of a part.

The results must be provided by Renault to the parts suppliers. If the results are not consistent, it is necessary to implement corrective actions according to the recommendations of the anti-corrosion production planning and control. If the part or its associated assembly is not tested, the anti-corrosion Production planning and control will give an opinion based on similar part results during previous tests.

For an innovation, e.g. new coating, new technology, new part, a corrosion test of 70 cycles should be performed with a part representative of mass production, if possible.

Part load specifications cannot replace this standard. If specified corrosion tests are available, they must be performed in addition to the corrosion tests specified in this standard.

To ensure that a part is properly designed for corrosion, current design rules must be followed. These include some basic rules:

  • Orientation of edges not visible to the client
  • Does not retain water
  • Limitation of galvanized couplings

The compatibility of materials (chemical composition, processing mode, final appearance, mechanical resistance, and the like) excluding corrosion is governed by part properties.

In terms of the puncture resistance requirement, a 12-cycle “Renault ECC-63 Corrosion test with automatic alternation of moisture and drying stages” must be performed for the relevant chassis bodies (e.g. engine subframes) in accordance with the 1-year puncture corrosion requirements. Then, the connections and welds must be completely disassembled and opened, and the connections and welds must be checked for couplings and hollow bodies (limited red oxidation). The location in the corrosion chamber must be documented to identify the damage of the various couplings.

Based on the results obtained, the corrosion prevention production planning and control may request an expert to determine the loss in thickness. These should be less than or equal to 5 percent of the thickness of the sheet metal involved. If this is the case, the corrosion prevention production planning and control also verifies the corrosion test.

This standard should not be used in the following situations:

  • For example, for parts such as hinges or cross members that are assembled on the vehicle before the paint shop phosphating/cataphoresis steps.
  • For example, for parts sealed in a box (body and lid). However, if necessary, a proposal should be requested from a corrosion prevention production planning and control to see the corrosion risks for the necessary tests to be carried out. The duration and type of corrosion testing should be evaluated by the corrosion prevention production planning and control. This evaluation is carried out to ensure corrosion resistance in accordance with the requirements.
  • Standard 01-70-007 applies to hood hinges and hinges.
  • Parts specifications should be checked for brake rotors (brake discs, drums) and exhaust parts.
  • For removable parts in vehicle maintenance, the oil filter, gasoline or diesel filter, and the part specifications for the front and rear window wipers should be checked.
  • For repeatable and multi-user part connection components, standards 01-71-002 and RNES-B-00059 apply.
  • For phosphate coated connections, the RNES-B-20044 standard applies.
  • For heat galvanized parts (thickness at least 40µm), the NF EN ISO 1461 standard applies.
  • For permanent contact with automotive fluids, for example: coolant inside radiators and similar, the Renault Group should be contacted.
  • For stainless steel parts exposed to temperatures of 300 degrees or higher, part specifications should be consulted.

If there is any doubt about any of these limitations or other cases (magnesium parts, parts installed before cataphoresis, etc.), Groupe Renault should be contacted.

Corrosion prevention targets are defined by the product department and the corrosion prevention technical policy committee (CPTA). Corrosion prevention coding is defined according to the damage level, the determined criteria must be documented. Each criterion corresponds to a code that constitutes the corrosion coding to be specified in the functional drawing or reference specifications. This coding is given only by a corrosion prevention production planning and control. The criteria are determined on the basis of:

  • Anti-corrosion targets
  • Visibility of parts
  • Corrosive damage to the vehicle area
  • Cracking damage
  • Exposure to heat
  • Specific chemical damage of vehicle fluids
  • Additional features
  • Maximum evaluation at 37 corrosion cycles according to standard 02 102 30
  • Maximum evaluation at 37 corrosion cycles according to standard 02 102 70
