VW TL 260 Painting of Metal Surfaces - Surface Protection Requirements

VW TL 260 Painting of Metal Surfaces - Surface Protection Requirements

The standard "VW TL 260 Paint on Metal Surfaces - Surface Protection Requirements," developed by Volkswagen, specifies the requirements for corrosion protection of black paints on metal surfaces. However, this standard does not apply to paints on zinc-plated metal surfaces (VW TL 227 standard) or decorative protective paints (VW TL 218 and VW TL 52451 standards).

VW TL 260 Painting of Metal Surfaces - Surface Protection Requirements

The corrosion tests of this standard apply to ferrous materials. For aluminum materials, other corrosion cycle tests are permitted (e.g., VDA 233-102 standard) in agreement with the materials engineering department of the relevant brand.

For surface protection types, the surface protection types listed in the table provided in the standard are applied. For example, for the Ofl-x010 surface protection type, standard paint is permitted only after agreement with the relevant brand's materials engineering department and the relevant design engineering department. There are no requirements for corrosion protection. For the Ofl-x634 surface protection type, in trication phosphating, cathodic electrocoating (thick-layer cathodic electrocoating) applications (e.g., chassis parts, trailer drawbars), different zinc phosphating is permitted only with the approval of the relevant brand's materials engineering department.

The basic requirements in this standard are determined as follows:

  • Initial supply and approval of changes must be ensured in accordance with the VW 01155 standard.
  • The prevention of harmful substances must be ensured in accordance with the VW 91101 standard.
  • The cutting burr on the components must meet at least “medium” manufacturing accuracy according to the VW 01088 standard.
  • A minimum of 8 items are required for a complete test.
  • The coating must have the specified surface protection with the specified properties over the entire surface.
  • Coatings must be free from pores, cracks, paint runs, foreign material residue, damage, and other defects that impair corrosion protection or the specified appearance.
  • The paint should adhere firmly to the base material when the parts are used as intended.
  • The manufacturing process and its control must not impair the usability of the finished part.
  • Proper assembly of parts should not result in damage that impairs the function of the part or reduces the specified corrosion protection.
  • Coatings used must be free of compounds containing hexavalent chromium or lead.

Surface protection types and appearance must conform to the table provided in the standard. The paint color must always be black unless otherwise specified on the drawing.

If air-drying coating systems are used or if the paint system is not baked at high temperature (60 degrees and above), the components should be conditioned at 60 degrees for 24 hours before the tests, after which the tested devices should be cooled to room temperature (according to standard VW 50554-2).

The coating thickness must conform to the table provided in the standard. Coating thickness may be limited for bonding and contact surfaces; this must be indicated on the drawing.

A cross-cut test for adhesion and brittleness must be performed according to DIN EN ISO 2409. This test should be performed using adhesive tape with a bond strength of 10 N plus/minus 1 N per 25 mm width. The adhesive tape should be pressed firmly against the surface by hand, with the cross-cut applied, and then pulled off with a sharp movement perpendicular to the surface.

In short, the VW TL 260 standard is a technical standard developed by Volkswagen that outlines the requirements for corrosion protection of black paint coatings on metal surfaces, such as those found on vehicle body parts. This standard applies specifically to components that are not zinc-plated and are not intended for decorative purposes.

The main features of the VW TL 52451 standard can be summarized as follows:

  • Scope: This standard applies to black paints on metal surfaces, excluding zinc-plated metals (covered by the VW TL 227 standard) and decorative coatings (covered by the VW TL 218 and VW TL 52451 standards).
  • Environmental considerations: Requires the exclusion of hazardous substances such as chromium (VI) and lead in paint formulas.
  • Paint thickness requirements: This standard specifies minimum paint thicknesses to provide adequate corrosion protection.
  • Test procedures: The VW TL 260 standard outlines various test methods for evaluating the performance of paint coatings. These tests include:
    • Cross-cut adhesion test
    • Stone impact resistance
    • Resistance to fuels, oils and coolants
    • Corrosion testing such as salt spray fog and moisture condensation exposure
  • Surface protection types: This standard defines different protection types (such as Ofl-x010, Ofl-x100, Ofl-x300, Ofl-x600), each with specific properties and application guidelines.

The VW TL 260 standard is part of a broader set of technical standards aimed at ensuring the durability and quality of Volkswagen vehicle surface treatments. Compliance with this standard is crucial for suppliers and manufacturers who produce or apply paint coatings to metal components for Volkswagen vehicles.

Our organization, which has been supporting businesses across all sectors for years through a wide range of testing, measurement, analysis, and evaluation activities, has a strong team of employees who closely follow global developments in science and technology and are constantly improving themselves. In this context, we also provide testing services in accordance with the "VW TL 260 Metal Surface Paint - Surface Protection Requirements" standard.
