FCA MS.90075 Pressure Sensitive Adhesives on Components for Sound Suppression, Vibration Dampening and Thermal Insulation Purposes

FCA MS.90075 Pressure Sensitive Adhesives on Components for Sound Suppression, Vibration Dampening and Thermal Insulation Purposes

The “FCA MS.90075 Pressure-sensitive adhesives for components for sound suppression, vibration damping and thermal insulation purposes” standard , developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), an Italian-American automotive company, describes the requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesives pre-applied to various fibrous and composite materials for bonding to flexible and rigid cellular foams, clean and newly painted metals, and various plastic surfaces.

These components are die cut to the shapes and dimensions expected in the specific drawing from sheets of base material that have been treated with a pressure sensitive contact adhesive on one surface and protected by a paper/plastic liner that must be removed prior to application. The requirements for which part to follow are specified in this standard or may be specified directly on the component product sheet or drawing.

This standard replaces the FCA PF 90175 standard.

The components covered in this standard are typically used for sound suppression, vibration damping and thermal insulation purposes in vehicle areas such as the engine compartment or passenger/luggage compartment. This standard specifies physical, source approval and quality control requirements for adhesives used in the manufacture of parts to be bonded to hard surfaces such as dust and water seals, anti-vibration spacers and gaskets.

To ensure that the processes provided meet all FCA requirements, it is imperative to meet the requirements outlined in the CS-9800 standard.

The supplier of these materials is responsible for ensuring that their products meet or exceed the test requirements listed in this standard and perform according to their application.

Materials tested to this specification must comply with the requirements of CS-9003.

Components are classified according to the type of support material and the area of application in the vehicle, according to the table titled “Classification or materials” given in the standard, as follows:

  • Type A: Support base material: expanded cellular, field of application: engine compartment, service conditions: temperature at least 100 degrees, presence of water or moisture.
  • Type B: Support base material: expanded cellular, field of application: door panel, service conditions: temperature at least 80 degrees, presence of water or moisture.
  • Type C: Support base material: expanded cellular, field of application: passenger compartment, service conditions: temperature at least 80 degrees, presence of moisture.
  • Type D: Support base material: compact (felt/board), field of application: passenger compartment, service conditions: temperature at least 80 degrees, presence of moisture.

The adhesive shall be applied in a smooth, uniform film covering the entire intended bonding area to meet the requirements of this standard. The exposed adhesive area shall be protected from contamination prior to use with a release liner that will bond perfectly to the adhesive-coated surface, especially along the edges. The release liner shall not cause craters, fisheyes or other defects that will damage the paint repair system. The release liner shall be removed cleanly without lifting the adhesive film or tearing the liner. The exposed adhesive shall have sufficient bond strength to permit normal production handling without failure once applied to the intended bonding area.

The test environment (unless otherwise specified) should meet the following conditions: room temperature 23 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees, atmospheric pressure 860 to 1000 mbar, and relative humidity 60 percent to 65 percent. Adhesion properties should be evaluated at least 72 hours after component preparation.

The tests mainly performed within the scope of this standard are as follows:

  • When performing the lap-shear test, the lap joints are prepared as shown in the figure given in the standard. Three 100 mm x 20 mm strips of the actual piece thickness of the test material are applied to each painted panel. The panels shall be flat, burr-free and have the following dimensions: 70 mm x 100 mm x 0,8 mm. The test panels shall consist of FeP5.00604 steel, freshly painted with non-metallic enamel according to the standards PS 5.00606 and PS 90035 or metallic enamel according to the standard MS.5.00750 and degreased with heptane or any pre-saturated cloth specified in the standard PS 4856 or any surface preparation method according to the standard PS 04. The samples are compressed using a 5 kg roller and compressed 10 times on each side on the samples. The samples are conditioned as indicated in the table. Samples conditioned at a temperature other than ambient temperature are kept at room temperature for 2 hours before the tensile-shear test. Samples conditioned in a steam-saturated atmosphere are kept at room temperature for 10 minutes. Samples conditioned in water should be subjected to the tensile-shear test immediately after removal from water. Test results are given by the arithmetic average of three measurements.
  • When performing the adhesion test, three samples are prepared in accordance with the tables given in the standard. A 100 mm x 200 mm strip of the actual piece thickness of the test material is applied to each painted panel as described above, but with the following dimensions: 200 mm x 100 mm x 0,8 mm or the actual piece thickness, on the same substrate as the final application. The piece is compressed using a roller as shown in the figure. Immediately after the conditioning times listed in the tables, the samples are bent around a 40 mm diameter mandrel.
  • When performing the creep test, three specimens are prepared for creep testing on vertical surfaces. This type of test is applicable only to type D. A 100 mm x 130 mm strip of the actual piece thickness of the test material is applied to each painted panel. The panels shall be prepared as detailed in this standard but with the following dimensions: 200 mm x 100 mm x 0,8 mm or the actual piece thickness on the same substrate as the final application. They are compressed using a roller as shown in the figure. The specimens are placed in a vertical position so that they are aged as indicated in the table. The specimens are allowed to cool for 2 hours at ambient temperature, after which their assemblies are visually inspected for loss of bond or creep.
  • When performing the creep temperature test, a specimen is prepared for the creep temperature test by following the same procedure described for the lap shear test. The specimen is conditioned at room temperature for 24 hours. The specimen is placed vertically in an environmental chamber (oven). A 0,5 kg weight is applied to each strip of test material as shown in the figure.
