KIA MS341-19 Recycled Soft FELT (Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET)

KIA MS341-19 Recycled Soft FELT (Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET)

The “KIA MS341-19 Recycled soft FELT (polyethylene terephthalate, PET)” standard, developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation, the oldest motor vehicle manufacturer in Korea, applies to soft FELT used for sound absorption or insulation. This material is generally used as floor carpet absorbing felt or as specified in engineering drawings. Polyethylene terephthalate is a preferred material for making moving parts operating under high pressure. The composition of this material is shown in the table provided in the standard on the following basis:

KIA MS341-19 Recycled Soft FELT (Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET)

  • Pure fiber (regular polyethylene terephthalate)
  • Recycled fiber (polyethylene terephthalate fiber) (recycled PET fiber is made from scrap of an absorbent manufacturing process)

The general requirements in this standard are described as follows:

  • Parts using this material must comply with all requirements of the relevant assembly performance standard.
  • The chemical composition and processing conditions should not be changed inappropriately, which may affect the quality of the parts.
  • Before changing the chemical composition of the material, it is mandatory to consult with the materials and quality control departments.
  • The felt should be free of any odor that could give an unpleasant sensation.
  • Sound absorbers and skins must be shaped as otherwise specified and free from breaks, wrinkles and similar defects.

This material is tested by the methods defined in the standard and must comply with the conditions specified in the table.

In general, the standard condition of the laboratory in the tests is 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees temperature and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity. The samples are tested on the samples immediately after a conditioning period of at least 48 hours in the standard condition specified above, at least 24 hours after molding.

Weight: Samples are prepared in 300 × 300 mm dimensions. After measuring the weight, the average weight is stated in units of grams per square meter. At least 5 test samples should be used and the average values should be reported.

Thickness: A 100 × 100 mm specimen is placed on the horizontal plane of the anvil. A 120 × 120 mm steel pressure plate weighing 150 g is placed on the specimen. After ten seconds, the specimen thickness is measured using a vernier caliper. At least 5 test specimens should be used and the average values should be reported

The following standard is followed for tensile strength:

  • “KIA MS200-41 Test standard - Soft vulcanized rubber)”.

Heat resistance - Tensile strength: The sample is placed in a thermostatic chamber at 50 degrees plus/minus 80 degrees for 2 hours. Then the tensile strength is determined. At least 5 test samples should be used and the average values should be reported.

Heat Resistance - Shrinkage: A 150 x 150 mm sample is prepared , centered on a 100 mm x 100 mm marker . The sample is placed in a thermostatic chamber at 80 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees for 50 hours. Then, the sample is held under the specified conditions for 60 minutes. Shrinkage in both length and width directions is measured. At least 5 test samples should be used, and the average values should be reported.

Water absorption: Samples with a size of 100 mm × 100 mm are kept horizontally in a heat and humidity control oven at 40 degrees plus/minus 3 degrees and 95 percent relative humidity for 16 hours. The sample is removed from the oven and the moisture on the sample is wiped with a tissue. Then the water absorption rate is measured. However, the weight measurement after absorption should be made within 5 minutes after the samples are removed from the oven. At least 5 test samples should be used and the average values should be reported.

The following standard is followed for odor:

  • “KIA MS 300-34 Odor test method for interior materials”.

Compressive elasticity ratio: Samples as large as 100 mm × 100 mm are prepared. The sample is placed between steel panels with a thickness and dimensions of 100 × 100 × 0,8 mm. Then a 500 g weight is placed in the middle of the sample. Then the weight and the steel panel are removed and the compressive elasticity ratio is measured after leaving it under the specified condition for 1 hour. At least 5 test samples should be used and the average values should be reported.

Sound absorption coefficient is measured according to KIA MS200-39 standard for the sound absorption coefficient of 1/3 octave band, and the result is reported at 1000, 2000, 3150, 5000 Hz. Then measured at low frequency 100 Hz ~ 1,6 KHz. For the reproduced sound absorption of 1/3 octave frequency, the lower one should be reported. At least 5 test samples should be used and the average values should be reported.

The following standard is complied with for flammability:

  • “KIA MS 300-08 Standard test method - Flammability resistance for interior materials”

For each test item described in this standard, the test report must be submitted to the relevant material team and quality control departments. Whenever materials, recycling and suppliers are changed, the test report must be submitted and approved.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also testing services in accordance with the "KIA MS341-19 Recycled soft FELT (polyethylene terephthalate, PET)" standard.
